I was assigned there from Feb 08 - Aug 09. Be thankful you are only there for TDY. Worst duty station and city in the US.

Agree with two points: 1) Changes happen constantly on installations worldwide. Sometimes for the better, other times for worse. I am glad to hear Ft. bliss has improved their standing on the list. And 2) You make the best/worst of any assignment. I made the best of it while there. We enjoyed camping in Cloudcroft, Diablo's baseball games, Rhino's hockey, and most importantly hunting on MacGregor Range.
However, my opinion still stands: in Feb 08 - Aug 09 that place was a cr@p#ole and best enjoyed as a TDY.

I have been in and out of Ft. Bliss since April of 1994. I have been back here for my longest stint since October of 2010, with a 6 month break for CCC. While I have never been a big fan of El Paso or Ft. Bliss, it is a far better place now than it was in 1994, 1999, 2003 or even 2008. That being said, I spent my young years in the Army from the age of 18-21 at Ft. Irwin, now that is the worst place in the Army!!!!

Soto gym was my favorite while I was there. Also the Soldier Activity Center is close to it. The SAC has a rock climbing wall, video game rooms, computer rooms, coffee shop, outdoor pool among other things. You can google ft bliss soldier activity center to see what its about. Just like MSG Mario Franco said there is always things going on around Freedom Crossing on main post.

lots to do in and around Fort Bliss. many excellent fitness centers. and if you are up to it, Mckelligon Canyon is the place to run. beautiful scenery and excellent workout. there are also many other activities on and off base to do as day trips, hiking, camping and more.
