Sergeant Dakota L. Meyer is a United States Marine Corps veteran, recipient of the Medal of Honor, and the New York Times best-selling author of Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War. He is also an entrepreneur, having founded a successful construction company in Kentucky.

Meyer earned his medal for his actions during the Battle of Ganjigal during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He is the first living Marine to have received the medal since 1973 and one of the youngest.

Since 2012, Sgt. Meyer has worked with Hiring Our Heroes and Toyota to advocate for veterans and transitioning service members as they navigate their transition to civilian employment. He helped develop the Personal Branding Resume Engine, an online resume-building tool developed to help veterans market their military experience to civilian employers, and now travels the globe to educate employers on the value of veterans in the workplace and mentor service members as they prepare for their own transition.

Sgt. Dakota Meyer completed his active-duty service in 2010 and now serves in the Individual Ready Reserve of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Hello and thank you for your service. As a Navy vet that transitioned to civilian life in the 1990s, I'm curious to know if SM that served overseas in Japan or Germany for example have services available to them to bridge the logistical curve due to being out of the US for prolonged periods preventing them from hitting the ground running when compared to their CONUS counterpart. In particular, Navy personnel attached to forward-deployed vessels essentially have very little support-- then and now for these veterans when discerning a transition. I welcome your thoughts.

Really simple question that I've always wondered as a veteran and only a few could ever answer: From the initial phone call to the actual award, what the heck is it like going though everything leading up to the ceremony? What is that experience like? What do you have to do? I picture a lot of people running around for you making sure everything is perfect - uniforms, awards, dry runs, meetings, etc. Can you tell us a bit more about what is going on behind the scenes? Any particular, funny memories during this that stand out?

Sgt Dakota Meyer Thanks for joining us here. Thanks for your acts on that fateful day. You have achieved a lot since your service, but your fame from the recognition of your actions still looms large. It probably gives you some insight that may help fellow veterans. What's the most important lesson you can pass on to us on relating to our fellow citizens who have not experienced war? Or even service? What is important to keep in mind in communicating with people whose views and judgement of you are so influenced by something they haven't got relatable personal experience in?

Thanks for joining us SGT Dakota Meyer. Several years ago I found out that a WWII MOH recipient lived near my parents home. I considered giving him a call and inviting him out for lunch or coffee just to meet him and chat a while. I guess just to say thanks for his service. I never did call him because I was told he was uncomfortable taking about his medal, the battle that he earned it in just brought back to many bad memories. What are your thoughts on getting invites for coffee or a meal just to chat about your MOH situation? Thanks for your insights!

Dakota ! As a USO Volunteer I want to first, and foremost, want to THANK YOU. There are a lot of Vietnam Veterans on Rally Point and I started volunteering because I did not want your generation of warriors coming back to the same reception.

Sgt. Meyer, thank you for taking our questions. Isolation was one of my most difficult areas to overcome, one that I work on constantly. I am very content to spend time with self, however, I knew and know that real enrichment comes from interacting with other people. The balance of trust and protection of self is an area I work on regularly. What advice do you have for returning service members or veterans struggling with isolation?

I retired from the Army about 18 months ago. I haven't found a follow on career that I'm passionate about like I was about serving in uniform. Thankfully, I don't need the money, but I'm looking for those opportunities to do something worthwhile for others. How did you deal with this when you transitioned? How did you move beyond the drive to deploy down range again like we've done so many times?

Please tell me what you think is the greatest challenge facing service members as they transition from the active duty ranks to civilian sector in regard to employment opportunities. I have a few thoughts but want to know what you're generation truly thinks. Also, how much value do you place on veterans earning or having a degree when it comes time to transition?

Hello Dakota! I have two questions. The first is how you would suggest veterans to get involved in higher education. Once members leave the active component or the reserves, many use their GI Bill benefits to go to college. How would you suggest they interact with the higher education population in order to bridge the gap between us and those who don't understand veterans and the military.

My second question is if you offer your time to do speaking events. If so, I want to suggest to my University that they should bring you in so you can speak to our students/staff, as well as our military population. At my University during the last count, between 10-12% of the student population were veterans.

Thank you for your valuable Service Sgt. Meyer! My question for you is "How has employer's been to accepting not only Veterans in the workplace, but Veterans with PTSD/TBI?" As a national ambassador for our Veterans, Military, Fire-Rescue, and Police Personnel suffering from this disorder, I would like to have a better understanding of the average reception. I create awareness through Auto Racing, so bringing Veterans, and Military personnel to the track where not only potential employers are at as they sponsor many cars, I'd like to help learn how to help place our brothers & Sisters into Jobs! To what extent have you found it difficult to leave your service behind? Have you been able to live a relatively normal life as a civilian, or do the people around you draw a lot of attention to your service? What do you do to stay focused on the future, not just looking backward at your service?

I suspect that I already know the answer, but what was your reaction to hearing that had earned the medal? I ask because I've had the privilege to know personally several service members that have done extraordinary things under fire in service of their country and the general consensus seems to be "Why me? I just did my job as so many of my brothers in arms have done, and I sacrificed so much less than so many others did."

Sgt Meyer, first let me say thank you for your service. My nephew is also a Sgt in the Corps. He has three deployments to Afghanistan. I believe his MOS is rifleman and/or recon. He is about to complete his eight year in the Corp and plans to separate sometime this summer, possibly August 2017. I'm reasonably sure he saw his share of human suffering on both sides of this conflict. I believe he intends to go back to school to pursue a degree in engineering. What does the military in general offered to our combat veterans as a means to prepare them for civilian life in an effort to minimize the effects of PTS? Given no formal training as an eighteen year old who enlisted in the Marine Corps, what job skills would he qualify for as a rifleman/recon-man.

I commend you for the things that you are doing to get Veterans involved and finding their purpose in life and to give back to others like yourself. I have some friends that you may know of. A Marine Colonel, a Marine General, and a Sergeant Major of Marines. All share that common bond that only a few good men can. I thank you for your services to our Corps and Country. My one question for you is Do you still believe that we should be fighting a war that you and I know we won't be able to win. Great to always seeing you offer advice to service members. Your Navy Comm w/V actions are quite impressive as well. If you had one benefit you could have used more on active duty/transitioning; what should the "young members" look into these days? GI Bill, Tuition Assist, fellowships, internships, apprenticeships, etc

I really have no questions for Sgt. Meyer. I was in the Navy, but I never met a Marine that I did not like. Unfortunately, my tour of duty was in the Delta of South Viet Nam,with the Army, while the Corp was up at the DMZ. GOD bless them one and all for all that they did. If a person wants to know about Marines, just read what they have done done through their history starting at 1775. It broke my heart, that the last two to die in Veit Nam were Marines, protecting the American Ambassador. It is aid that once a Marine always a Marine. I am a firm believer it that. I thank you Srg. for you loyalty and honor to your Country. May GOD watch over you and yours. Simper Fi !

I've had a tough readjustment after the USMC. I struggle with alcoholism. I also served in Afghanistan in the Helm and province. Sgt. Dakota Meyer, did you ever find drinking to be a problem for you after it was all said and done?

Hope I am not too late getting this question to you. We met a few years ago in Orange County California. You were attending an event in Costa Mesa when a Marine friend, saw you and went chasing after you. You were nice enough to visit with us, so that we could take some pictures. I know you get invited to a lot of veteran events, but most of us do not know how to reach you. Are you available to attend Memorial Day ceremonies? Hi Dakota,
I am a former Captain from the U.S. Army. I had a really tough time securing employment after over 15 years of active service that I had to accept peanuts to gain employment in a global organization in India. It is as if the U.S. has turned its back on this Veteran after serving. How would you recommend I brand myself to earn an assignment commensurate with my experience and advanced education?

To me what I have found is my military career falls way below any college that I might have or in my case not have. Many of interviews I did fantastic and was more qualified with actual experience than others that applied. To my realization, I did not get any of the jobs as I did not have a 4 year degree. I loved my 32 years in the military, but it serves me only with pride, nothing more.
