Help to justify Mountain Warfare School?

Mountain Warfare School. I've always wanted to go. I spent 6 years active duty (airborne, manchu mile, slic) and no course has even phased me. After a 7 year hiatus I joined the National Guard. It's been fun but I still really want to go to MWS. How can I justify the Guard to spend the money to send me to MWS? Michigan btw.

You will have to show proof positive that the course will benefit the unit readiness and training.

No seriously. My guard unit is in South Texas. About 3 miles from the border. Flattest land ever. Still got a slot and graduated AMWS.

That is a tough sell, even if you deploy to Afghanistan, as a 91H odds are real slim that they would need you as a lead climber.
Start with having your BLC and ALC complete before you ask for an ASI school.
Then be prepared to provide an Exception to Policy (ETP) Memo through your BN and BDE to your State G3 with the justification for why you need an ASI that is not included in your unit's MTOE.

Transition from CSS to a walking slice element; infantry, FO, engineer....

Outside of that, your odds of a slot are between, Slim & none.

Your MOS does not call for the SKAs of a Mountain Leader. (Unless you are in the VT national guard.....)

It might take a little bit of legwork, but your state quota manager (S3 side of things) might be able to work up some magic. I know from when I went and when we get guys back, there's usually unfilled seats, by way of swaps not processed or cancelations. While the biggest class fillers usually originate from the 86th, someone within your state can probably trap a seat, and it's not exactly surprising to see people from the active side or some of the flatter areas in attendance. If its not something your state has a lot of, or have ever sent anyone to, I'd expect a strong push against, and in the event that a seat was snagged, extra scrutiny leading up to by way of making sure you'd be able to pass the graded events and physical portions of the course itself. Who knows though, could pave the way for more of it in your state.
