Some are tasty, some are not. But one thing for sure, you don't have to worry about using latrine much after eating them.

I used to heat up the beef stew and cheese in my paladins heater and mixed in some crushed cracker. Hooah you had a pretty good meal there sometimes better than the wives cookin lol jk

That beef ravioli looked like condoms until I read the tagline. It's been a long day at work...

Are these determined by hot vs cold as well or all assumed hot? Do they include all the other things packed in, or just the entree? What about the things you can mix in to improve the entree?

So many unanswered questions!

My last unit always had heater meals for breakfast before rolling out for an exercise, then MREs for the rest of the event. Looking back, I wonder if one of the leadership had special connections

There may or may not have been multiple occurances of the infamous MRE bombs in my platoon. Steam heater pack, Tabasco, water. Shake. Seal. Throw. Good times!

I'm going to have to say that Chili Mac is probably the best MRE out there. Taste decent cold and pretty good heated up. Also, the extras that come with it are pretty good too.

Hot or cold "Spaghetti with Meat Sauce" is by far the best. Closely followed by the Beef Taco

Ravioli?!? Chili Mac?!?. It's a damn shame you present members didn't get to experience the dehydrated pork patty, the 5 pack of hot dogs, the omelette and the pork with maggots (rice) in barbecue sauce. Do they still have the fruit cake? Who thought that was a good idea?There a centuries old jokes they have about that damn cake. Why would they think that a fruitcake would be something a soldier would eat? I guess they figured that if you're hungry enough you'll eat anything.

I remember the first MRE I ever ate back in the '80's dehydrated pork patty complete with dehydrated ketchup and extra crunchy beans. I had just joined my unit and had not gone to basic training yet. it was my first drill and we were having a P.O.W camp training exercise. the Capt. had all the new recruits standing and holding a specialist up on a pallet , he opened an MRE grabbed the jelly out of it and started smearing it all over us. when asked how I liked the jelly I replied it would have been better if any flavor but grape sir that's when he shoved the dehydrated pork patty in my mouth and said you look hungry eat this.my thoughts were WTF did I just get myself into here? they have come a long way since then. the best 1 I ever ate was the beef steak .

I have to say I am lucky that I did not have to eat one MRE in the last few years. I however may be eating more than my fair share this coming ECT.....

I am so ancient that we didn't have MREs. We had C rations and some really were horrible. Beans and franks was about the only safe choice. The ones that they were handing out in the sixties were also packaged during the Korean war so they were about 15 years old (according to the date on the cans).

Being somewhat of an authority on the subject, I can tell you there is a reason why MREs are called Meals Refused by Ethiopia (a fact, not a joke). Best field rations? French, Polish, and German. Nothing smoothes the ration like a little pouch of wine. The only drawback is they all have much shorter shelf life. So, 10-15 years after Armageddon you and I can still enjoy ... anything but MREs.
