The neck tab has always cracked me up a bit. I would say that I understand both sides of this. However if we're going to make all of the uniforms gender neutral, then we need to make sure they work equally well for both males and females. Why not celebrate our femininity rather than making us look more masculine? Plus if they're going to "fix" the uniform, they should strongly consider lowering the waist bands and getting rid of the mom-Jean style khaki and summer white pants. Those look terrible on almost all body types. How many times have my Marine, Soldier and Airman Brothers giggled at the Stupidity of the Navy Sea-bag?

Give Sailors a comfortable, durable and nautical looking uniform. The only problem with Dungarees were the pants. All they needed were legitimate pockets. The new dungarees were excellent, the coveralls were excellent. But the Aquaflag is simply stupid at every angle.

With regard to women's uniforms, follow the pattern of the male working uniform. I don't have to wear a skirt, why should they? For dress, I'm full on okay with a female cracker jack. But only if the pants are equally disturbing for overweight female Sailors as they are for overweight guys. And yes, the Dixie cup for both should be the case. I am proud of my dixie cup and keep one on my shelf with all my other ballcaps. If we are changing the cover for uniformity, does that ribbon of a tie really make sense? As a younger sailor, ladies always loved my Crackerjacks in both White and Blue and looked good in them too. Sailors need to look like Sailors, not two different Services. All of the pictures I have seen of women in new uniforms show professional looking Sailors. Why would any woman want the same uniform as the men? Women in Cracker Jacks looks ridiculous. A woman in a Dixie Cup is about as odd looking as a Labrador with a poodle cut. In civilian life do you see men and women dressed alike? I personally like to see woman's service uniforms as being distinctly different, yet complementary to the uniforms worn by men. Woman are shaped different, think different, and move different; and thats a GOOD thing. For the men: yeah give me some pockets and a place to store my cell phone. Lord forbid the next uniform change could have us all carrying purses. Enough already! Those covers make the women look like train conductors, not naval personnel. Believe it or not, the tie has improved, it no longer resembles too much the Bozo the Clown one we wore in the early '80s. I don't think the Navy will be serious about uniform changes for women until they do away with skirts completely. We are all supposed to be warriors and uniforms are mean to be uniform yet nothing breaks up a formation more than skirts and heels. Unless of course the Navy wants to put everyone in skirts and heels? Just kidding - don't attack!

I originally wore Salt and Pepper and Winter Working Blues day to day and all personnel wore Service Dress Blue. It was u-n-i-f-o-r-m. Women did have 3 covers to choose from for day-to-day wear, but this was based on different hairstyles need different covers. Of course, this was in Washington, D.C. and we wore civilian clothes 4 days a week until 1981; apparently protesters didn't target us on Wednesdays when we all wore our uniforms. One way in which CNOs can make their presence felt is to change the uniforms. (In my day it was ADM Zumwalt relaxing haircut standards and authorizing beards.) In the 70's, we got rid of our cracker jacks and wore CPO/Officer uniforms but with silver buttons. I was a first class at the time and it felt strange. The uniform was double-knit, another bad idea, and sagged immediately after putting it on. Then I made chief, and had to change the buttons, and later made senior chief and master chief; only having to ad star(s). I kept the same combination cap, only changing the black band and devices as I advanced. I guess it was a good idea to have us all in one uniform, but as a first class, it just didn't seem "sailor" like. And the poor women were constantly changing uniforms. And what moron thought up the Navy camies?
