I understand that I would not qualify for BAH/BAS and would be required to maintain my barracks room, but I just want to make sure that I cannot get in any trouble for doing so.

You shouldn’t. But if I were a company commander, I would counsel you and probably make an appointment for you to get with the financial management rep to iron out a logical budget. If you rent a 1 BR apartment, insurance, utilities, etc. will run you probably over 50 percent of your actual pay. Also moving off post you will probably be eating more on your own expense and not receiving BAS so that’s another expense. If you own a vehicle you have to figure that in as well. Also, if you are not contributing to a retirement plan, you need to be as well as some sort of savings plan. So all these things added together on PFC pay would make me nervous as a senior leader about you moving off post.

Look technically you must have the CO authorization to do so. If you are late 1 damn time, they can move you back in billets for as long as they want. It will cost you a ton of money- rent, utilities, transportation, meals, etc.

Thank you SGM so my situation is actually fairly cheap because the apartment is my friends right off post and it will only cost me 200 a month. Included with power, water, heat, utilities, etc.

I know this isn't the answer you want, but please be careful when making such a huge decision. Paying for rent, utilities, transportation and food will eat away at your paychecks quick. Simply getting out of the barracks isnt a good enough reason to live paycheck to paycheck.

I get that SSG. I should have put more detail explaining. My friend is an an apartment off post about 2 miles away and I have a vehicle and he is only going to charge me 200 a month with utilities, power, heat, water all included.

Yeah man more details would have helped for sure. But that doesnt sound bad at all. As long as you stay financially sound and make good choices, you'll be good. Most soldiers blow through 200 a month on bs anyway. Just make sure you keep your chain of command informed through the process. Oh and be ready, the second something goes down at the barracks, like a huge detail, you'll still be there because you'll be considered barracks personnel. I've seen it multiple times.

SSG Clint Underhill - Yes that would be no problem! I pull lots of barracks duties around the entire battalion as it is (like at least 10 a month). I appreciate the feedback and advice SSG.
