While I think it is disgusting, I must point out that when a person buys a home where there is an HOA the person agrees to obey the rules of the HOA.

I specifically bought a home without an HOA. I will not accept someone telling me what I can or can't do on my property. I understand neighborhood aesthetics, but when they tell you not to fly the American, State, or Military flags... I will have a problem with those marxist associations.

When one buys into the HOA, isn't this particular rule a rule already known prior? (I've heard this particular one many times) If so, then what the home owners are doing, and I hate to admit it, is wrong and they should be fined... This isn't about the HOA being unpatriotic, it's about home owners deciding not to follow rules they themselves agreed to... And are using patriotism to justify noncompliance...

It is very sad that Homeowner Associations are opposed to residents flying the flag of the U.S.A. SPC Nick Lai.
It is one thing if the HOA bans all flags. In that case flying a flag outside violates the HOA policy. Homeowners should seek exceptions to policy in that case.
It is certainly outrageous if the HOA discriminates against the flag of the U.S.A. only.

HOAs are legalized racketeering outfits, and need to be made illegal.

How does it make ANY sense for you to PAY a community to restrict your rights?

I will NEVER live in a HOA community again. Did that ONCE. Never again!

the purpose of HOAs (in their own minds) is always to sell units, and to do that (in their own minds) neighborhoods must always look as if nobody lives there

HOAs are the worst. They get away with things like this because the home owners all have a vote on policies. You can't fight them. You sign a contract when you buy your home, and that contract binds you to the covenants. Try to fight the HOA and you will lose. And even if you win, you still are going to spend a lot of money.

The article is incomplete. It gives a one sided view, and the standard line of "for the troops". What is the real reason? Is it because someone put up an ISIS flag, so to make it fair ALL had to come down? That would make sense. I'd like to see a more complete story. Not a dig at you SPC Nick Lai, just the way the article was written.

when I shopping for me first home ... "no HOA right?". that is my first question. no matter how nice the price and house looks ... I walk away from a HOA area.

Unless you were assigned a home with a HOA, then abide by the rules. Sounds like they have enough support to have the flag deemed as "not a decoration." I'm tired of hearing about HOA's restrict this or that, "I'm a vet" ect. Do not buy a home with a HOA! I served to protect my freedom, why would I hand that over to a d-bag neighbor?

Why I bought a house in a NON-HOA hood. Tired of battling un-American sentiment. I proudly fly my flags and post my "We don't call 911" sign. The neighbors love it.

I can't take anything that organization does or says seriously. The HOA needs to be banned itself because the organizations rules over people living in those communities is an infringement on freedom. If I bought the house and property it sits on then I will do what I damn well please on it so long as it doesn't affect my neighbors. Anyone doesn't like it can take there opinions and place them you know where. When it comes to showing patriotism in the form of flying our nation's colors or displaying any other national symbol then even the neighbors get no say. My countries flag offends you then you better move because I sure as hell won't and I won't take it down either.
