Home grown terrorism in the Army?

A National Guard Soldier and his cousin were just arrested and implicated in an ISIS inspired attack plot on military installations in the U.S. They planned to use military uniforms and weapons to stage the attack.

Thoughts?

A U.S. Army National Guard soldier and his cousin have been arrested on charges of conspiring to support Islamic State, the Department of Justice said on Thursday. The two Chicago area men, both U.S. citizens, spoke of using army uniforms, along with military knowledge and access, to attack an Illinois military installation, the department said in a statement.

Facing a maximum of 15 years imprisonment and a max fine $250K seems a little light to me, especially for the 22 year old Soldier!

This is nothing new. We have people like this in our ranks for a very long time.

I'll never let anyone forget about the time I witness such craziness first hand.

One Soldier developed and carried out a plan against US-based interests and it's military in an attempt to stop the invasion of Iraq just 2 days prior to the invasion. Two Service Members were kills and several injured.

I really hope an in-depth study is done that looks at how they guys were turned, and that we can figure out to stop it from happening. If they are found guilty, they should be locked up for the rest of their natural lives.

I caution against using the term "terrorism" (yet). Attacking a military installation (hard target) even by a terrorist organization, is not necessarily "terrorism," as a=opposed to an "act by terrorists."

This is more akin to a military operation 'as described.' We risk diluting the term when we call everything and anything terrorism. If the goal was to change policy through force by instilling fear/terror, then it is terrorism. If it was merely to strike a target without the intent of changing policy... then things get sketchier.

As for the perpetrators. This is why we must always be vigilant.

This is a good example of why stolen valor can not be allowed. You can't allow individuals to go around wearing the uniform as it presents a serious security risk. Hasan Edmonds was going to let his cousin, Jonas Edmonds, use his uniform to carry out the attack as he traveled overseas to join ISIS. This is not just about having the right to lie there are serious implications in this not being a crime. The father, Lieukennye Edmonds, is serving a prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender stemming from a 1990s conviction for the attempted sexual assault of an Aurora woman. Jonas Edmonds and two others were charged in suburban Atlanta in the armed robbery of a McDonald's restaurant, court records show. He pleaded guilty in 2005 and served 5 years of a 15 year sentence. Send them to Leavenworth.
