The King & I: The Impending Crisis in FA's ability to provide Fire Support to Maneuver Commanders
I am a BN CSM and Former 13F and I've seen this trend happening since the moment they removed the 13Foxtrots from the DS BN HHBs. I worked Fire Support for 20 years at every level from Platoon to Division and understand the value of complex fire support training. As a National Guardsman, I'd like to know what is working with other National Guard units on this issue.

As a former 13F for 20 years on AD I will say this. FA has no position in these Asymmetrical Warfares. You can have the arguement that precision munitions is the key, but the truth is DF gets approve more than IDF. The military does not even use 13F like an asset anymore. Now if a conventional warfare broke out. Then Artillery would get the first call. My suggestion keep Artillerymen (13-B,C,D,E,F) trained but smart. If you allow them to go to college they will appreciate in more ways then one. FA needs to stay relevant but stop acting like its so important it cant allow artillerymen to attend school. I wish I had the opportunity to attend school instead of getting fed our FA mission was so important, really what mission?
When I was in, almost 30 years ago, we were assigned to an FA unit. The FA unit either reassigned or attached us to the supported unit at the FA BN CDR's discretion. We had little to do with the FA BN. We lived, worked and trained with the supported unit
The advantage to this was that the supported unit knew the quality of people supporting them, and we cross trained in either Armor or Infantry. We could take the position of gunner if needed.
The disadvantage was promotions, especially into the SNCO ranks. When the 201 file was looked at, it seemed as though we were bouncing from one unit to the next and not working out in any of them.

I haven't been in long but my unit is pushing JFO schools for us Joe's. Air support is faster and more accurate than IDF. It just makes more sense the way we fight battles now.
