They showed up for PT and were then allowed to leave until class started, once class was over they were authorized to depart Fort Lee so long as they reported in the next morning.

Fort Sill might be different, but I imagine your experience would be more lax than someone still in IET. My Medical Specialist course back in '94, we had two SGTs reclassing with us and they were treated like the rest of the IETs. My Combat Engineer and Preventive Medicine AITs, we prior service were left to our own devices as long as we made it to PRT and class on time. Once I got to the schoolhouse all of the reclass were put on our own floor in the barracks. Just show up to class on time, once class is done you can do whatever you please and have weekends off. People who were close to sill went home and got their vehicles. Just avoid the iet soldiers when your outside of the class and you’ll be alright. It surprised me how much of the adjacent military town "Lawton" had grown so much. and was much cleaner than I remember. I hardly recognised it. Back in 1975 Fort Sill had an open gate. But after 911, they apparently Locked the gate to both civilian and military personnel without a pass. I had to get a temporary day gate pass just to enter through the very secure manned with half a dozen MP's with weapons gate. and fenced much higher that I remember. Another surprise... I had to present my Drivers License and registration at a building about a quarter mile from the gate to enter the installation. My info was also added to their database. Also letting them know I was Prior Service didn't make it any easier to get through the Gate. Once at the gate They visually checked my vehicle. This was not the reception I expected. Once on the base I found the all the concrete barracks where enlisted men stayed were demolished, and wre replaced by new condo like barracks. I happened to talk to 2 enlisted men Private E1's that had my old MOS 13B. They were in the Motorpool area which had also been upgraded. They had two old relics aka self propelled Howitzers on display. But they were now museum pieces, and is what I was formally assigned to. The new more modern artillery is now towed howitzers - much to my surpise! Many of the roads and their names are still the same. But so much of the 1960's and 70's buildings are gone or have been replaced or change including the newer uniforms. No camo uniforms when I was stationed there. Olive Drab Green with a lot of starch! I don't miss that. Things have really changed at Fort Sill in 40 years. Many of the old landmarks are still there at the Headquarters and administration area of the base including the artillery museum with "Atomic Annie" the only artillery weapon to fire an atomic round in Nevada. It is huge! My visit brought back many memories. Response by SPC Michael Corrothers made Oct 7 at 2022 1:17 PM 2022-10-07T13:17:48-04:00 2022-10-07T13:17:48-04:00 2021-05-11T20:34:10-04:00
