HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARMY! Am I the only one who thinks that sounds "weird"? People are "born" and have birthdays... ARMY was "established" and while the date is important, I just think it's odd to call it a birthday!

Honestly, I never knew when the Army observed/celebrated their birthday. But, now I've got June 14th circled on my calendar. Albeit early, Happy Birthday! I will raise a glass to you all, this Sunday.

I will be celebrating the Army's 240th birthday and my 40th anniversary working in or for the Army (27 Jun 75 to 27 Jun 15). I always enjoy the Army's birthday because when I joined up we were (still) celebrating the Army's 200th birthday! And I've been able to celebrate my Army anniversary right about the same time, for the past 40 years.

I was going to say some donkey/goat joke. I was going to say the Navy was first even though our birthday is later in the year. So that doesn't work. On top of that the Navy had to be established twice as it was dismantled after the Revolutionary War. It stuck for good in March 1794.

Nonetheless we've been hanging together for a long time. Happy Birthday Army. Hopefully we'll never hang separately.

I can eat some cake if that's cool. I remember the last time I ate Army birthday cake. I was in the field in Korea. I got really sick because the icing was super rich.

I raised my homes flag at sunrise, saluted in my way, said a prayer for those deployed and those in service stateside, sent a text to my Dad saying, "Happy Birthday, Soldier, We're 240 years old today. I Love You Dad!," went inside got a cup of joe and walked to my patio. There I took stock of the Soldier I am and the leader I strive to be, while I reflected on the fact that I Am An American Soldier.
