Found this article very disturbing. It's incredibly sad to think 5th Group, the Group tailored for CENTCOM, the "horse soldiers" are getting shafted on missions due to poor leadership. How much of this is going on throughout each Group? Is it spreading throughout USASOC or SOCOM as a whole?

When you have an organization as large as SF, there's going to be a lot of bureaucracy. There are 25,000 green berets in the Army and national guard. That's the size of several large divisions, or a small corps. 1st SF Command, who are in charge of the active duty SF and are also in charge of Psyops and Civil Affairs, is almost the same size.

Plus, this is an old article. Some of the stuff the guy complained about is actually long standing USASOC and SOCOM security rules finally being enforced, particularly the cell phones, wireless devices, and locked doors. When I was in 1st group around the same time, SOCOM and USASOC sent out security inspectors and red cell teams to test and penetrate. The Commander and CSM took a big punch to the face over unlocked doors and cell phones.

The worst thing to ever happen to Special Forces was when it was made a stand alone officer branch. Then, Officer careers had to be “managed.” How does the Army manage Officer careers? By creating a plethora of commands and staff positions. Wit the coming of these “Commands,” came a deluge of paperwork which negatively affected those on the ground. It was much better when officers were mere tourists in the Special Forces community.

I disagree. Why would we want officers from other branches to come take command of us for a few years?

MSG Dan Castaneda I was in SF before it was an officer branch. The officers were tourists for the most and the ones that stayed were true believers like Ola Mize and Robert Howard. It was much better. And I see and understand your point.

MSG Frank Kapaun MARSOC’s leadership didn’t grow up in MARSOC. They brought in leaders from across the Corp and in most of their eyes MARSOC are no more special than other marines. But indeed they are and should be treated as such.
