I have 20% VA disability rating. 10% is due to PTSD. I am told that I have no chance coming back in the army as prior service because of this. Is that true? If so, what do I need to do to be able to get back into the military. I don't take any medications and have no issues with day to day life.

History of PTSD is a disqualifier, and requires a waiver.
Recruiter can tell you whether waivers are being considered.

LTJG (Join to see) You are misinformed with regard to a deployment resulting in an automatic award of PTSD. 31% of PTSD claims are denied.

VA does not award any compensation for PTSD based solely on a deployment.

VA can downgrade your condition from 10% disabling, to 0% disabling (or raise ot based on the rating schedule.) However, once a condition is service connected it will not be removed.

1. You were required to submit a claim.
2. CFR 38 §4.125 requires a diagnosis of a mental disorder (PTSD), which must conform to DSM-5 or be supported by the findings on the examination report.
3. A rating of 0% is assigned when PTSD is diagnosed AND determined to be service connected.
4. You stated your condition is rated at 10%, which is assigned when it is determined that there is occupational and social impairment due to mild or transient symptoms which decrease work efficiency and ability to perform occupational tasks only during periods of significant stress, or symptoms controlled by continuous medication.

Claiming you don't have PTSD, and that everyone who deploys is automatically granted 10% of they deployed, will raise concerns with anyone who has anything to do with any waiver for which you may apply. This may help you understand the Recruiter commander's response.

I'm just relaying what I was told by the VA when I tried to reduce to 0%. They also stated that there is no way for me to reduce to 0 even with my medical records showing no mental health issues. I didn't tell the recruiter's commander or the recruiter themself that I just got it for deploying. The commander didn't even talk to me and the recruiter told me that just the word PTSD no matter the % of disability denies me any chance back in the military

Maybe the Guard or Reserve are an option. Best wishes.

LTJG (Join to see) You will need documentation documentation documentation. You will need a kick ass recruiter that will fight for you. Get ready for a long one. You'll need a waiver just to go to MEPS. MEPS will then have to clear you. Then you'll need to get a Surgeon General's waiver to reenlist. My fight has taken 18.5 yrs for a med discharge (10% RE3 code).
