How can a reservist find a unit in Germany (fiancé is active duty heading to Germany)

I'm a reservist and my finance is full-time. We will be married 2 June of this year. From what I understand, once my fiancé signs his re-enlistment contract we will be moved together. His next duty station is Ramstein, Germany. With me being reserves, I need to know everything I need to do to find a reserve unit and work out there with him. Anyone who has advice, it's appreciated!

SPC Monaco, first, congratulations and best wishes for continued success and happiness to you both; now, this sounds like it will be a great arrangement, one active-one Reserve household, others that I've known in a similar situation have been quite happy. If you haven't already done so, you may want to look into the Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) program, I know that I've seen a ton of advertisements for USAFR IMAs at Ramstein over the years, and would suspect that the Army program is very likely always looking as well.

There are Reserve units in Germany! If you get with the Career Counselor that services your unit, they can assist you in finding vacancies. If you need to reclass to find a vacancy, you may be able to arrange it prior to moving to Germany. <div><br></div><div>Major Burns also mentioned the IMA program. There are (I believe) two Reserve units in Germany. Your J1 Should be able to help you with What is called an IST (Inner State Transfer). Here is a start for your future.

My wife is in the exact same boat. I'm active and she is looking for a reserve unit to pick up with. Right now she has a recruiter getting the list of open slots for the RC units in Germany, and then we will try to get her in where she fits in. I'll keep you posted when we hear more (you do the same)

It looks like you have received some outstanding advice from a lot of smart people on this thread.  I would echo the suggestion of sitting down with your career counselor first.  Those folks have a ton of information and a ton of contacts.  I have a few civilian employees in my organization who do their Reserve time with us.  All that is involved is some paperwork with their Reserve unit and they are taken care of.  For starters though, definitely sit down with a career counselor first.  Good luck!!!

You can use HRC's website to look for positions. Go to My Record and in the upper right hand corner is a tab called Tools. Believe the third or fourth link is to find a unit. Choose Hermany, your MOS, and then your current or next rank. You can use the radio tabs to switch between TPU, IMA, and ARE. <div><br></div><div>This will give you UICs and sometimes contact info for units with your type of vacancies -- it's a good check if someone's telling you there's nothing or to assist with the retention NCO to get specific info. </div><div><br></div><div>A caution on IMA duties -- they are funded by the USAR but managed by HRC, which is why there's always vacancies. It's a lot of self-management, and the bare minimum of 10 days of training are all that has to be funded, so you don't have the same security of that monthly income and an AT coming in every year. The AF uses their IMAs in a much different fashion than we do, and since IMAs don't contribute to the USAR's endstrength, there's little incentive to find them long-term. </div>

I just left Germany in 2012 and loved every minute of it, I believe that it will be a great experience for you. The 7th CSC is always looking for soldiers and they have several Civil Affairs units within the 7th CSC. Also, I believe that the 21st TSC has overall responsibility for reserves out there and they fall under USAREUR. They are an active unit, but they can assist with finding a unit. Good luck with your tour out there and have fun. Take advantage of traveling and seeing Europe, traveling over there is cheap and look at Ryan Air for air travel in Europe.

I have not noticed if the Army Career Tracker website is open to Active, Reserves, and National Guard, but if it is the site displays every position available within our service. It does not display open positions, it only shows what is out there. As I said, I am not sure if this is an Active only site.

Any comments from the group on whether this is possible?

So, I just confirmed that the Army Career Tracker does work for Reserves and it shows you every unit available. You can look up the unit, every position for a Specialist, every location available for you to work, etc.

SPC Monaco, good luck in the marriage and overseas. Have you spoken to your readiness NCO or supervisor about this? Depending on how long you will be gone, is it possible to SUTA?

I have a CPT in my unit who's wife is active duty. He spoke to our unit commander who helped him set up a SUTA program with a Germany unit for the few years she was over there.

Might be worth looking into.

SPC Monaco, The 7th Mission Support Command (Formerly the 7th Civil Support Command) is located in Kaiserslautern, Germany. It is about a 20 minute drive from Ramstein Air Base. They have many openings. Log into My Record on hrc.army.mil and select tools - vacancy search. Select TPU and location AE. You can scroll through all the openings and call to verify they are open. Once you find a unit go through your career counselor at your current unit to ensure you lock in the assignment. If you do not have the MOS in the listing the unit may be willing to send you through reclassification training. Once you arrive and become MOSQ if required ask about ADOS opportunities if you would like to get more involved.
