How can I change my MOS?

My current MOS is a 88H. And I have an 8 year contract. Let's say I want to change to 12B. How do I go about doing that?

If you are in the reserves, it's pretty straightforward. You find a unit with a 12B slot and get transfer paper work initiated. Once the transfer goes through you will be sent to reclass school by the new unit. As far as active duty goes, I'm not 100%, but I believe you have to speak with the career counselor and your unit and again find a unit with a 12b slot.

For active duty you have to check the in/out call. If your MOS is open to move out of and the new MOS is open to move in to, then you have to fill out a 4187 to change the MOS. Go through you retention NCO or S-1.

Did you accept a bonus for your current MOS? In my day, if you did, that would limit what you are allowed to do.

If your current unit has 12B positions, you should talk with your leadership and work with your training NCO you go to 12B reclass.
If your unit doesn't have 12B slots, log onto HRC, my records, tools, vacancy search. Enter 12B and select TPU. Depending on your state it should display several vacancies. Talk with your leadership and work with your HR section to put together a TPU transfer request packet.
Once your transfer is effective your new unit will send you to 12B reclass.
For school information, log onto ATRRS course catalogue (AKO>Training Tab>ATRRS) and enter 12B1O into the MOS dropdown menu. Your unit can tell you which school they have quotas for. Look at the dates for each course and make sure your leadership knows you're available at that time. Additionally, make sure your administrative readiness is current and valid (APFT, HT&WT, DA 5960, DD 93, SGLV, iPERMS records review, and SRB) no more than a year old.

Start with your team leader and work your way up the chain. Eventually your commander will have to sign off on it.

My MOS was 16C
