The current effort in Afghanistan is winding down. The majority of units still involved are in either security or training missions. I don't know what the deployment cycle is for the 18th and have no idea if your unit would be called upon to serve in the medical support role. As far as you being cherry picked for a deployment...I have to be honest and say that at your rank you just don't have the kind of experience needed yet. Even SFAB units are looking for at least a promotable specialist to even be considered for the assessment process. And I'm sure you understand how that has affected our military. Having a deployment patch or not isn't as big a deal as it used to be. A deployment is likely nowhere on your unit's radar, they've got other things to worry about.

It might be wise to focus your energy on getting promoted. Take on extra duties, perform well. There might still be time for you to get picked up by someone if you get some more experience. You're at Bragg after all.

Hope you work it out and you don't find yourself with regrets. Your time will come and it won’t discriminate. You state for many complex reasons, which is concerning. The idea of deployment is not complex, you train , your ready, you deploy. War is honorable, but not sexy. So I will not patronize you, your time will come. Stay fit, stay trained, stay ready. Deployments aren’t what you think they are. Its most likely that your unit isn’t ready for deployment, that or the army has no use for you overseas right now. Its good to show motivation, you wanna deploy, good for you. But now is probably not the time for you, you’re a PFC. Volunteers the army wants will usually have combat experience and a few more chevrons. Those are the ones who get sent first. Wait your turn, this ain’t the same army as the one during bin laden. You can’t just hop on a plane and go stack bodies just cause it’s a Friday.
