I just got some terrible news I found out my grandma is dying from heart and kidney failure
I’m in AIT. Missing a few days will recycle me to a different class if the commander approved

I took emergency leave when I was in AIT and got recycled. I don't regret the decision. There's no shame in recycling for emergency leave. The real question is whether seeing your grandma before she goes is worth more to you then having to re-do some training.
You need to decide. If you get a Red Cross message about grandma, your CO will authorize leave -- you do not have to take it. But you do have to look yourself in the mirror in the morning.

grandparents aren't considered immediate family for emergency leave according to AR 600-8-10. While the commander may grant ordinary leave, this situation doesn't rise to emergence leave requirements.

I agree with SSG Dale London. You may get recycled, but the closure you'll get will probably be worth it in the long run. Just my opinion.

SGT James LeFebvre - That is correct; however, if the SM can provide proof that they were raised by the grandparent, the Army then considers that grandparent to be immediate family member.

Regarding Grandparents being immediate family, back in the day, I set the bar for the burden of proof pretty low. Essentially, if the soldier was more than mildly upset (i.e. they were actually distressed) that was all the proof I generally needed to put in a word with the CO. Emergency leave is not a gimme. They will claw that time back. But time with Granny? When she's gone, she's gone. Go home. Say good bye. Get your head on straight and come back ready to work.
