So I was honorably discharged from Fort Drum after 5yrs and immediately enlisted into the New York Army Nasty Girls. Swore in and signed papers at Fort Drum before reporting to my NG unit upon being discharged from Active. Served in the NG for 2yrs and was honorably discharged again. Fast forward 10yrs I’m looking through my DD214’s in order to buy back “military time” through my state retirement and notice I do not have a member 2 or 4 copy showing the “honorable discharge” from active duty which is required. I contacted the National Archives who sent my all my records with negative results for my Member 2/4 copies. They told my on the phone they do not have those copies (only the member 1/3 which does not show the separation section at the bottom) because they were never sent from my duty station. I was then given the Army Human Resource number and spoke with a some lady who informed me that according to their computer records my member 2/4 copies were “incorrectly filed” and they don’t have those copies. She then added I’m not really sure what to tell you or where your copies would be.

At this point being 10+ years removed from Active duty and the nasty girls I’m not sure if contacting Drum or NG unit would benefit or who to speak with or if they would even still have them on file after this long.

Any suggestions on where to go from here in retrieving those copies showing “honorably discharged” would greatly be appreciated!!! Thank you.

Almost all the State have their own Department of Veterans Affairs (usually headquartered in the capital). The Separation or Transition Points routinely provide copies of the DD214 to them. Wouldn't hurt to check there. You may also access your own records at the U.S. Army Human Resource Command website if you have a DS Logon ID (the same ID used for the VAs ebenefits). Best of Luck!

I am in the midst of the very same issue. Only member 1 copies are available. mysteriously my member 2 and 4 are not on record anywhere. I need to buy back 4 yrs of service from 1982-86. My records from 90-95 as an MI Officer are in my possession and on file. I have called just about every agency with no luck. As a last resort, I was told to submit SF180 to Human REsources Command and specifically request a Statement of Honorable Service for Federal Buyback of military time. You should include any evidence you have that the service period in question was honorable. I sent in all my awards, my other 214s. Orders placing me in the Reserves 2 months later that showed an Active TS/SCI clearance, any statements of Retirement Points such as the 249-2-E (shows "creditable points"). I know this seems like a headache, but I was told that was all they could do. You will send this information to Fort Knox HRC via e-mail. Make sure they send you a notice that they received your packet. If you do not receive one, CALL! I just received notification that my packet may take up to 3 months to review (ugh). I will let you know what happens at that point. Good Luck - you earned the credit and don't give up until you get it!
