How do I find out if someone actually served?

I suspect this young "gentleman" of stolen valor; he says he almost graduated from Marine boot camp but washed out due to a heart condition. He has a poor reputation in this county and he's a known liar.

1. If they didn't graduate boot camp they never "served". Being in boot camp means you volunteered to be trained. If you didn't make it, for whatever reason, you were simply a recruit. Graduating boot camp, MOS school and being assigned to a unit have to happen before you begin "serving". I don't care what the VA regulation says, so don't bother arguing with me.
2. If you don't march across that parade deck in San Diego or Parris Island you are not a Marine. I had a buddy from high school who tried 3 times. Spent almost a total of 1 year at MCRD. He didn't graduate. He is not a Marine.
Unless the gentleman is trying to cash in on his highly questionable "service" I would just leave it. If he's a known liar, do you think anyone will believe him?

By his own admission he didn't complete training, the only stipulation might be how they discharged him. I know one guy who broke in basic, something about a fracture in his pelvis during a ruck march. They medically separated him and he gets some benefits from the VA I believe. That said he doesn't go around boasting about his military service, real shame I recall him being very motivated to graduate.

Also realize that the Stolen Valor Act only covers very specific things:

Stolen Valor Act of 2013 - Amends the federal criminal code to rewrite provisions relating to fraudulent claims about military service to subject to a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both an individual who, with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit, fraudulently holds himself or herself out to be a recipient of:

a Congressional Medal of Honor,
a distinguished-service cross,
a Navy cross,
an Air Force cross,
a silver star,
a Purple Heart,
a Combat Infantryman's Badge,
a Combat Action Badge,
a Combat Medical Badge,
a Combat Action Ribbon,

any replacement or duplicate medal for such medal as authorized by law.

Generally people like that are best ignored if they aren't harming anyone.

Personally I wouldn't give this clown the time of day but if he actually enlisted he will have a copy of his enlistment contract. If not this, ask who the recruiter was that signed him up. The fact that he didn't finish boot camp means he is not a Marine. You don't get the title until you finish training, period, end of sentence.

Almost graduating bootcamp is pretty tame in regards to stolen valor. The stolen valor act is very specific about what is punishable under the act.
You can submit a FOIA with HQMC but you won’t find much even if he did almost graduate

This post seems odd coming from a "Sarnt"
A. It's not Stolen Valor or even being a clown because he's not running around saying he's a combat Vet he's saying he got a Med Separation.
B. According to the VA he's considered a "Veteran", so ask to see his VA card.

SGT Richmond, I read through these threads to see the comments and saw you had posted some additional information as well so I have to sum this up.

You took out a loan for him to get a truck and he hasn't paid you back. Because of that you want vengeance. In order to do that you want to find out how to look up his military record to discredit him for "stolen valor." He already has a bad reputation and is a known liar but it will make you feel better tracking this down as it will be payment of sort for being swindled. Fair enough.

However, as many noted, this is not stolen valor even in the slightest. Even if you thought that despite him being a known liar and having a bad reputation he was somehow more trustworthy to pay you back. If your belief that enlisting in the Marine Corps and failing out of boot camp made him more reputable despite having other thoughts about him isn't stolen valor. That is just poor judgement on your part.

What good will be done by you spending all of this time trying to prove that this guy is not what he says? Failing out of boot camp is not a highlight of a military career so it isn't like he has admitted to doing anything exceptional. The best you will do is prove he didn't even do that. Will that make him look worse? Probably not since he is already considered a liar. Or will it may you look bad for being so vengeful that you took so much time to follow up on something so meaningless to discredit someone because it made you feel better?

When I was in boot they found I had a heart murmur, something I’ve had since I was a kid, it only shows with exercise, didn’t catch it at AFEES.. I explained it to the Doc and he said fine to go on. I didn’t want out, but they didn’t push fir more tests either. But it does explain my inability to run 3 miles in under 20 minutes too, the leaky heart valve does sap strength and endurance and I was doing a PT test 5-6 days a week, except on Sundays. It did limit things under a severe work load. But if you don’t complete boot your certainly not entitled to be called a Marine.

What valor is he stealing? Admitting he washed out of Boot Camp is a failure, even from a medical cause. He has no benefits, and doing so actually prevents him from even trying to enlist in any other service. Besides, he would still have a DD-214 and/or some kind of medical release. Only someone who completes Bootcamp is a US Marine. I am offended by anyone who tries to use a portion of his training as a method to claim he belongs to my Brotherhood. In another post someone suggested you ask for his Recruiters name, I don't see how that matters. He did not complete Bootcamp, therefore he is not a US Marine.

Over the last 43 years of service I've found that a few appropriate questions will determine such an answer pretty quickly as I've dealt with such individuals (about 10) but none who claimed to be discharged while in basic. I find it hard to believe he passed a physical at MEPS to enter military service if he had a "heart condition", we all take one. Everyone gets a DD214 but attempting to prove or obtain such a document will have a very long wait. I wouldn't waste my time, let the authorities deal with this if it ever becomes such an issue. I sure as hell wouldn't be bragging about such a discharge though... As for the morons who were trying to snow me as to their "prior military service," their answers to my questions clearly outed them, a few in public and a few in private. It wasn't that important in any case.

I had someone in a Veteran's group who claimed to be a Vet. Later discovered the person was injured during Basic Training. She was discharged after 90 days. Spoke to a recruiter who stated she was entitled for benefits because of the length of time. Got her dismissed since she lied about being stationed at a base with a MOS. She never went to Tech School!!!

If this guy is as you say he is, then why not just let it go. Everyone who knows the guy knows the truth. Is he actually wearing the uniform with awards on it while saying is is a Vet / Marine?
You have to have more than just hearsay or lies coming from his mouth to accuse him of Stolen Valor. Can he produce a DD214 showing he served more than 180 straight day’s of Active Duty. Or if he was Indeed medically Discharged from the Marine Corps, he would indeed have a DD214 stating Medical Discharge.
Either way, without the evidence of his 214, official Personal Files to look at. I think your wasting your time and energy on this dude.

Everyone has a DD214, even a washout. He may have an actual heart condition, that made him not be able to graduate from USMC Boot Camp. I hardly think of serving when all someone did was Boot Camp, but he tried.

This problem is becoming more common all the time. In my state, they place the word 'Veteran" on your driver's license, next to your picture once you have verified your service. But this has become an issue with some Circuit Court Clerks adding this to some who have never served, stolen valor in my opinion.

Ask him where he graduated from Basic and what his MOS was. Even if he did not pass basic he would have been given an entry level discharge. Further, he would not be a veteran.

My younger brother was separated from service within one day of entry due to a blood anomaly. What it was, i don't know. This was in the last week of the Vietnam War. According to the federal archives he did in fact join the active army and received an entry level separation due to medical EPTS. And the federal archives sent him a document form in lieu of a discharge expressing one day of service identified as entry level discharge. The point is that he was in fact enlisted, but not a veteran. He took a stand when many ran.. like Biden, Clinton, Trump, Etc. So, if the guy says he is a vet and never graduated, he can do the same thing... Get proof of service through the Federal Archives and he would have no problems proving he enlisted, was accepted, and received an Entry Level Discharge but has a non Veteran status

Request a DD-214. Even if the person did not finish training, they would still receive one. In this person's case, it should be a medical discharge which would be an honorable discharge.

Unless he is somehow receiving benefits that he should not be receiving, what does one accomplish or gain out of verifying what you already correctly know? How is this impacting you or anyone else? Is he trying to claim veteran status? Is he trying to use said status for monetary gain? Is he claiming awards or decorations he didn't earn? If not, then it doesn't meet the standard for stolen valor. Since he said he washed out of Marine Boot, he can't claim the title Marine. He didn't get the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. Now the next question is why do you even care? Saying he "almost" graduated, but washed out is nowhere near stolen valor. Cool your jets.

Don't jump to conclusions. I had a 70 year old acquaintance that I was working with that had a bad knee, no money or insurance. He said he hurt it in the army. So I told him to go to the VA. He said he had and they couldn't find any records on him. Allegedly they were lost in the St Louis fire. He had been married four times and left with less each time. This guy knew to much. Told me things about Ft Lewis, Ft Richardson, Camp Humphry. One day he mentioned being in the FL Army National Guard for a couple of years. We tracked down his DD214. He has a new knee, hip and being treated for cancer.

Recently at my America Legion Post where I serve as Home Association President, we had to dismiss a guy (very nice guy that everyone liked) for stolen valor. He was 70 years old and claimed to be a Vietnam Vet. He had publicly received a reward from another local Veterans Group. Someone in the crowd knew he had never served and called it into our county DA's office who sent out a detective to interview a couple of our folks in leadership. Months passed and we thought there wasn't anything to the accusation. He took up a position as Trustee on our Board the next year. Due to gambling licensing, he had a background check that turned up a misdemeanor where he claimed guilty and was fined around $5000.00 but never told any of us and just continued to play his part. Six months later the Liquor Control folks warned us of not renewing our License without taking corrective action. I called an immediate Emergency Board meeting. three of us veterans met with him, confronting him with the public documents - which he denied until shown the documents. I had him sign a resignation and took his keys.
We wondered about all this and how it was so easy for this charade to occur. This is how it occurred. He obtained his original membership from the state ghost Post membership, then got another Post's membership via a transfer, then transferred again to our Post. Due to this mess, we will not accept full membership to our Post without a copy of their DD214.
It will not happen again.

Why bother. Fact is if his biggest claim to fame is getting kicked from boot camp maybe you should just walk away. Technically he is a "veteran" if he served any days after in processing and should have a 214.
IMO, if he says he got a med discharge in boot camp, that sounds pretty honest.
Now you jar-heads can argue if he is a Marine or not, LOL. But I would not begrudge him being a vet, to a minimal extent. He signed the papers and swore the oath, and was on "active duty" for a day+, he is a vet.

You really cannot find out(FIOA) if someone is a vet as those(214's) are confidential records(they have a social security number on them for one thing). Only him or people he gives permission, and people with good cause(family members ,power of attorney, etc) or some government/authorized quasi-official entities, can request/get them.

I was elected to a incarcerated veterans group once, we checked everyone that wanted to join. They had to produce a dd214 ,if they weren't able fo we had our laisan contact verify them. But as a rule they wash put they're not considered as a veteran plain and simple. As was posted on this chain if they wash out, no benefits not a veteran. The laisan as well stated the same thing , we actually had a couple of people tried stolen Valor they were dealt with accordingly.

Cpl Vic Burk, I was the only recruit in my platoon with jump wings on his chest and 28 years old. I passed the primary PT test in boot camp at MCRD San Diego with a dislocating Shoulder. My platoon Sergeant Staff Sergeant Perry tried to make me Platoon Guide, and or Squad Leader, I refused, because I wouldn't bust heads(My Term). I did however teach the young men in my platoon their General Orders, Code of Conduct, Chain of Command, how to disassemble and reassemble an M14 without seeing it, and how to make a proper rack. I was sent to Balboa Navy Hospital to get my shoulder repaired. While there there the Navy Master Chief that was in charge naval and marine recruits recovering from what ever maladies they had., And while was there I learned that my "Paltoon" finished their training as #1 in the Training Regiment in late 1972 - early 1973. I got an Honorable Discharge with the MOS of 9900 Basic Marine, Did not complete Basic and though I did not receive my Eagle, Globe and Anchor, I still consider myself a MARINE!! So young man, I disagree with you as sometimes there are extenuating circumstances. Semper Fi!!!

A DD-214 is the surest way to prove any amount of service. I have a friend who completed boot camp, MCT, and got discharged in his MOS school for a previously unknown heart condition. He's still a Marine because he got through boot camp, and he's got a DD-214 (I believe it was an Admin Separation).

If he did not finish Boot Camp, he did not serve. My son-in-law claims the same thing. He enlisted but washed out of Boot Camp. BUT, he thinks he was a Marine. I told him that he is full of it. Boot Camp is not serving as a Marine. Graduating from Boot Camp is serving as a Marine. I know a man who claims he lied about his age to get into WWII. If he got in just before the war ended, he had to serve for the Duration of the War plus 6 months. By some miracle, he managed to graduate with his original class. He doesn't know that I checked it out. Apparently it was not enough of a lie so he later claimed that he served IN Korea and IN Vietnam. He has never p[roved any of that to anyone who asked for proof. THAT IS A STOLEN VALOR CASE.

I'm going tor reluctantly Comment. I enlisted in the Marine Corps in the Spring or Summer of 1963. I had a hearing loss at the time of my enlistment. I served - as a recruit - for half of my boot camp (6-1/2 or 7 weeks) and really struggled with close order drill. During that time I went through a significant mental and "emotional" change. [My test scores on the Morse code test were way below average because I could not hear the "dots".] Because of my screwing up in COD, my DI sent me for a psych evaluation. My enlistment records (medical) were pulled. I should never have been accepted (due to my hearing loss) in the first place. Interestingly, I met a 16-year fellow in Casual Company (also awaiting discharge) who - due to a birth defect - was missing his right side chest muscle.) I received an Honorable Discharge. No, I wasn't a Marine but I did serve.

Technically, he is a veteran as a veteran is defined as:

(2) The term “veteran” means a person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.

Now, I am not sure what 'heart condition' he was discharged for, but it should have been caught at MEPS. I find it hard to believe this guy would have an undiagnosed heart condition in the modern age.

However, for me personally, if this guy started mouthing off about being a vet, I would tell him that no one with any honor would claim the title of Marine and veteran status from the Corps without passing the crucible. I would ride his ass derisively for falling out in Boot. He gets enough of this shit, he will stop.

Now as far as 'stolen valor" goes the only time this is relevant is when the guy is claiming to be a veteran to get something in return. And for a 10% discount at Home Depot this is not important; But for politicians it is.

The best way is ask questions you know about the military. Chances are he’ll stumble. Ask what his MOS was. What units he served and where base camps were.

I have found the easiest way is to ask what their MOS was. If they can reasonably answer that question, ask what unit they were in. Not sure fire, but I have found it pretty reliable for the Army and USMC.

I am sure this happens a lot. My daughter's ex-boyfriend constantly tells everyone he was in the Navy. Of course I would expect someone who was Navy to be very proud of that. After a few months, his boasting became 'zealot like.' I started having my doubts about his service so I started asking questions. He did not like me asking questions and he would either avoid answering them or just make up nonsense. I knew something was wrong when he complained about not being able to get medical care; when I asked him why he has not registered to get his medical care at the VA because he would have qualified for care because his income was below the poverty threshold. He then gave me an outrageous excuse and that is when I knew he was lying.

I then found out that he was dishonorably discharged because he went AWOL while in basic training and then became a deserter. It actually disgusts me knowing how many times he would tell people that he is a 'Navy Man' in attempts to get hand outs and freebies. At the time, he was young enough and strong enough to work but he chose instead to con people into giving him food and money because he would always boast that he is a veteran. The reason he left Basic Training was because he wanted to go to a family reunion not too long after arriving at basic training. How many people in Basic Training can take leave unless it is a dire emergency? I think the answer would be none, correct? Sorry for my rant and thanks for reading.

Ask him if he required a waiver at MEPS, and if not, how he got in with the condition? Ask him what MEPS stands for as an acronym. Ask him specifically what rank is Drill Sgt. was. If he was a Marine, he would know they refer to them as Drill Instructors and should respond with, my drill instructor was Gunnery Sgt. Jones, or Staff Sgt. Smith. Ask him where he went to boot camp - USMC has only Camp Pendleton, Ca., and Paris Island, SC. Then ask simple questions, such as, when marching, which foot do the Marines step off with? Almost doesn’t cut it. This “gentleman” is exactly that, a gentleman. He is not a Marine and that’s okay. However, tbh, he may be mentally unfit (heart condition? Wink wink, nudge nudge) so please be careful around him and if he has weapons or is involved in gang or extremist activity please at least call your local va center and say something. Please, never be the last one with a secret. Stay safe out there, ma’am.

Stolen Valor boils down to someone lying about military service for financial gain. I ran across someone who said "I almost graduated boot camp but was medically discharged due to an injury. I'm a Marine." Well, no, you're not. Period.

People parading around in uniform are just being clowns does not constitute stolen valor. They are clowns, pure and simple, and not worthy of my time to engage.
