How do I report a case of Stolen Valor when the person keeps doing it even after being caught? He's even used the status to get jobs.

Hello my names is James Kordell. I served in the US Navy from 1995-1999 i was a Damage Controlmen. I was honorable discharged with the rank of E-4/Petty Officer 3rd class. My ship was the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70. While serving we were sent on 2 deployments or better know as WESTPAC. Also participated in a RIMPAC. While on both deployments my ship served in Operation Desert Strike and Operation Desert Fox. Medals received while serving range from good conduct, national defense, battle E, and so on. While serving I was involved in an incident aboard that after discharged led to me to being considered, service connected disabled through the VA. My point to this whole message is I would like your advice on a case of stolen valor, a case that after I called him out on what he was doing and got him to admit to what he was doing. He is still doing it. In a nutshell what he is doing is saying he was a Special Forces Marine along with other things that Marines just don't do. He's even got a story about his whole unit being killed except him, that was only wounded. I probably wouldn't be so upset if he stopped after being caught. No, he's even gone as far to use his "status" to get jobs. Another reason this upsets me is I come from a family that most of us have served. Some have even died protecting this great country I've also got friends who have retired and some that are still serving, and God rest their souls some that have died. Please advise on what I should do to stop this person from doing what he is doing. If you'd like proof or evidence I can make that happen. Thank you for you time and God Bless America!

I would do an official request for his service records with a FOIA. You can get a copy of his public service record or a statement saying that he didn't serve. There are groups of vets out there do this like http://thisainthell.us. I am a huge fan of them. But I would let his employer know. I would also check if your state had a law against that. If they do you can report it to your state law enforcement. If not, you could seek help with the FBI.

James, I worked with a guy who claimed to be a SEAL quite a few times. Nice, fat, out of shape sack of crap salesman at a company that bought my company. I have a friend who was a SEAL, and he told me to ask him where his Budweiser was, and if he didn't put his right hand over his heart, to let him have it with both barrels. I heard him telling one of the young kids who worked there that he was a SEAL, so I walked over and asked him where his Budweiser was. When he replied "In my fridge", I walked him out back and told him that if I ever heard him claim to be a SEAL ever again, in person or second hand, that the the friend I had who was an actual SEAL would be paying him a visit to solve his problem. He never claimed it again. If you know anyone connected to one of the many Special Ops units, let them know who he is, they'll gladly take care of him for you.

If he served hell have a record, if he didn't you'll get a notice saying that too. Then go to your local media and bust him publicly. Embarrass him to the point that he'll either stop or move. Report it to your law enforcement officers. In most states it is a punishable crime to use stolen valor for financial gains...including getting a job. Additional, if he did get one...he would be guilty of false employment. If he applied to a government position (even county maintenance) he would be guilty of falsifying government documents.

Although I don't agree with stolen valor. I am retired from the Army National Guard. The problem is that we as soldiers defend their right to lie. We defend the constitution which gives them the right to lie, to make them feel good about themselves. Remember I am not agreeing with this action. There is a gentleman that's a nice word for him, getting full va benefits and I'm pretty sure he barely made it through basic if that. he went through in the 50's so records are sparse. All im saying is if you have enough information for someone to do some digging, report it to your local osi office, or va, as a frauglent person to make sure he isnt getting benefits at least. then you can report him the the bureau to make sure he isnt claiming tax benefits. then if any fraudlent claiming comes up, it goes to the court

Tell any Marine in the vicinity. It is in our training to deal with shitbirds. Easiest way to do it, is ask the unit, company, and battalion he was in, and where they were out of. He should be able to spit that out fairly quickly. Then do a quick Google search and make sure he atleast did the research to make sure they match up. If they do, then just ask about Marine corps history. Birthplace, where we earned the name devil dog, famous battles and quotes. That stuff is ingrained into Marines during bootcamp. Every marine should have an easy time with those. The only way I would believe him, is if his name is Marcus Luttrell. That dude is a bad ass. Good luck.

I have also quit giving a shit about the stolen valor epidemic. But, in your case, it is highly likely that he did get a job or promotion based on his lies (I used to not think that was possible, and I work for a VERY large national company) since that happened where I work. This shit bird was hired and promoted under the assumption of his made up police record (turned out he was never a K9 cop with state patrol, just a small town deputy that was fired for less than honorable reasons and not shot in the line of duty as he claimed). When another former jarhead buddy of mine brought it to management's attention, he was promptly put on their "shit list" and considered a lier and trouble maker. However this story has a happy ending. Shit bird was fired eventually, but he still had some fans and supporters where I work. He got a job as a police officer in a small town in the state. Then, promptly made headlines after a shooting incident without his vest cam on. His previous employment record was published in the news along with many other truths for everyone to see. And, now they know. So, that's how I feel about the stolen valor thing. You can't hide the truth forever.

I'm not certain what you meant by that, but there is nothing to stop you, as a concerned citizen and patriot, from going to his employer and saying "I'm given to understand you hired this fellow because of his storied past. Is that correct?" If the answer is "Yes" then you are certainly free to present information you know to be fact -- the photo is pretty good with a break down of all the "awards & decs" and show impossibility. If I was the manager who hired based on a war record and found out it was BS, that guy would be gone that afternoon. That is a management issue. Although it would amount to assault, I believe a good temporary (perhaps permanent) solution would be to hit him in the wallet. In my VFW Post we had a member who claimed to be a Vietnam vet. After having seen his dd214 which showed he served 13 months in the Navy before receiving separation for conduct unbecoming. No mention of Vietnam or any other service awards. I questioned his Eligibility and he has since left our post. I still have guys tell me he says he served 3 tours in Nam and was a seal and so forth. It is sad to see a POS like this fake his way thru society

Also don't waste your time calling your local Police Department, they do not have the jurisdiction to investigate a crime that initially involves benefits from the US Government. However if a local business has been defrauded they may still need to call the their AG's office or the US Attorney to get assistance. They may even tell to contact the Local PD, but that maybe a dead-end.

I wrote a 20+ page rant on some dickwad that claimed to be a U.S. Marine. I was POG as fuck being 6074, and this guy claimed to be an 0321 (recon). It's on Amazon and still free I believe. It's called stolen valor tainted love.
On a personal note I absolutely hate that stolen valor is protected under "freedom of speech." Especially when it is illegal to imitate a government official with "authority" like an officer, especially during times of Marshall law, military personnel do have authority.

This shames me that people take advantage of the goodwill of others by making false stories of heroism and false credentials. Its bad apples like this that creates skeptisicism of the true heroes. Its hard enough to gain good, competitive employment post-military without the furthered scrutiny created by a few bad apples. I am service-connected and college educated with leadership and management experience and yet I am having difficulty getting a good career post-military and its embarrassing for someone to use service as a status when they have never served or served to the degree they claim. I personally am ashamed that I was service-connected during training and have never deployed and as such would never consider claiming that I am a "war hero." It baffles me that some have no shame.

Thank you for serving first. As veterans we have a special bond, something no one can diminish or take away. We developed a strong sense of duty, and right and wrong. I would suggest seeking a copy of his D.D. 214 (public issue) and then sending a letter to his employer. Be factual and polite. Most employers take lying on an application pretty seriously.
The other option is too just ignore him, knowing you called him out. Most phonies claim to be super soldiers, sailors, or airmen. Most veterans were like me just a R.E.M.F., but very proud still.

For someone to claim to have either served at all, or to claim to have been wounded in battle; to claim to be a special forces or Navy Seal, tells me that they actually have more against them than a claim of false military service. This tells me they are either mentally ill or so down on themselves that they feel they must lie their way through life. We can turn them in and confront them day in and day out....but not much will actually happen to them...Sad, but true... You have to be better than they are, and you have to prove your worth... be sure of this... sooner or later they either quiet down or get caught.

Having read through several other posts the saddest thing I see here is a line of egomania. We are all brothers and sisters in arms. We served for a reason and should be proud of that fact and show respect for all who volunteered to put on the uniform.

None of us like impostors. It goes against our nature and training to tolerate impostors. Sadly, we have worked with many.....and have come to learn that there will always be the ones among us who will brag and set themselves above. Just remember this..... more often than not those individuals stumble and fall.

I ran into one in Arizona who said he served with SEAL Teams 5 and 6 in Coronado while in the Marines and he also completed BUD/s as a Marine. Never said he was in the Navy, just the Marines. I was busy walking my dog and didn't have time to hear his BS. SEAL Team 6 is stationed in Virginia Beach, VA. My 3 "C" schools were right down the street literally from their base. I saw them out on runs, wearing full beards and brown shirts. That is how I knew the guy was a total fraud. That and Marines have NEVER been allowed in BUD/s. Never found him again. Didn't confront him because I wanted to be absolutely certain first.

Receiving a job through claiming military service is illegal. However I'm sorry say, thanks to Obama and his minions it is not illegal to march around under stolen valor. According to the powers that be it is just a way to identify oneself as a person they wanted to be in real life but was never able to due to some kind of problems. For the life of me I do not get claiming fame when you haven't earned it! This is beyond a psyche concern. I think those of us that have served have learned the difference between pride and shame and our Basic Training was a great take off platform.

Personally, I think these disturbed individuals should be called out and shamed, afterwards the shame is owned by those who emply and who ignored the warning. I would think anyone who can either lie or be that deluded, will eventually expose themselves and hopefully reality will take over and put them where they belong, padded cells and meals served under doors.

I am amazed at what lengths people go to get a discount or leg up on a job. What really bothers me is that it isn't a crime to wear a uniform and medals, knowing you have never attended so much as a basic military training regiment. However if I or someone either active, guard , reserve , retired, or separated were to pound on these people we would be liable and face charges. Jimmy, let first start with why it does no good to be angry about these individuals who fake service. We, the men and women who served and earned our places are the only ones who are outraged by it. Congress, the Senate and the President have not put a bill or suggested one to combat this violation, so you and I are getting upset for no reason. I'd love to strip those medals off their chest and kick them down a flight of stairs but there is no backing if I do. There is no law, ordinance, or is there anything on the books in the near future. This politically correct society that we live in says that it is free speech. This same society that says protesting the funeral of a service member is free speech too. Our so called leaders need to do something and if not we need to elect leaders who will. I am a proud disabled, medically retired veteran and it bothers me that these limp nuts are getting away with that but leadership and laws lack when it should be out front and in force.

I don't know if this meets the definition of stolen valor, but I know of someone who had been on your boat and was booted out of the Navy from the Lincoln in '98 with an Other Than Honorable, after a sex-party incident in Hong Kong. He was lucky in that he was only dropped from an E4 to an E3 and didn't get a Dishonorable Discharge, although his charge was for sodomy. He went to prison for a while and when he got out, was passing himself off as an honorably discharged vet wherever possible. He doesn't seem to think this is a bad idea; I don't know if he's still on RP, but I hope not, his lack of integrity is a disgrace.

I also understand how that kind of behaviour can piss most of us off, but the heart of the matter is that, depending on the situation, sometimes is not even worth the effort. Claimed special forces, went to lejune even his age didn’t add up.
Gave him 10mins to finish his drink, round his people and leave the bar.
After 10mins I approached him and asked, “Didn’t I ask you to do something and also gave you 10 mins to do so?”
His behemoth of a girl opened her mouth, told her I wasn’t speaking to her and proceeded to beat the guy to the ground, once he was on the ground I continued to stomp on him until a friend of mine stopped me.
Come to find out (about two weeks later) the guy was in pretty bad shape after the lesson he was taught.
Was told I beat the shit out of him, my repsone was “lucky I didn’t kill him.”
Next statement was “No bro, he literally SHIT HIMSELF, amongst other sustained injuries from him tripping over your fist and boots.”
Moral of the story, fuck these lil bitches and just mud hole his ass.

Yes I was active duty.
1ID 2nd battalion 2nd infantry.
Yes I did some wrong things while in service.
Yes I was court martialed and discharged.
All for things that YES I did and accept my penalties for my actions, THAT DOES NOT MEAN I do not respect our service members, and yes I am STILL to this day proud of my service for our country. And will fight anybody that pull this shit and I catch it.

I had a few of my Marine brothers whom I served with may occasionally do a little exaggerating with their war atoriea. More like embellishing a few details to make the stories sound more exciting but I only knew one Marine who actaully was guilty of stolen honor by wearing a Navy cross and impersonating an officer all while fanangling a MAC flight to Japan.The guy got busted by a full bird on that flight who questioned him about the cross. By the time they touched down in Kadena the shit bird was facing court martial. If he is just lying then there is not too much you can do to a liar. If he is lying to get benefits of a veteran then that's a crime. Most places require you to provide military service records i.e a DD214, military I'D card. So I wouldn't worry most people that does fraudulent claims usually gets caught. I'm not sure what the latest on the Stolen Valor Act is but I think it basically says, that you cannot claim false military service to enrich yourself but "talking crap" is constitutionally protected free speech. Anyway, I think the best thing to do is get a pic of him wearing stuff he is not entitled to and send it to one of those websites which expose wannabes and phonies.

P.S. The next time you make a post, don't give all that info about your background. It has nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Maybe go to the press, law enforcement (violation of federal law, “Stolen Valor Act), and contact his employer.
I served a few years In USACAPOC unit that was a USASOC unit. I take pride in my service, and feel very proud to have been in a special OPERATIONS (NOT Special Forces) unit. Even deployed with a USASOC unit to OIF in 06-07 where I was injured and in 2010 “forced” to take a medical retirement due to my service in OIF.

Ummm should be careful, in the early 90's FORCE RECON was the true black ops unit.Operating mostly in South America and in the troubled Russian federation. The Force Recon was the true operators because know one really knew of their existence. In the early 2000 they were consumed by special operations forces. The Force Recon Marine biggest assets was their ability to operate outside the box. Mission parameters were basic, primary and secondary the end. Extract and insert points preset. Unlike Delta, and Seals our primary job was to recon and not to engage unless engaged.

In a vet group I used to belong to, we had a guy show up who claimed to be a SEAL and his service was in country in Vietnam. He was the right age and all, but as was posted by others, he was obese, friendly and was so unhesitatingly open about his claims. The next week, I came armed with a plan...as the group's communication coordinator, I got his details, DOB, etc. I reached out to the POWNetwork to verify. Nada. Shipley could find no record. He asked for BUDS class number and grad date. The next meeting, he talked and gain again about his hush-hush service and I asked him which team he served with and clas number and date. Of course he couldn't remember the number and he gave me a month and year, but no date. The kicker and the most laughable part was when he said he was in SEAL Team Delta. It was time to call BS and hit him head on with his claims. He confessed that he was just a machinist's mate FN on a carrier for two years and was in the vicinity of SE Asia.

I have no doubt that he still SEALs up as he walks around town in a biker vest with gedunk SEAL patches.

He sees me and walks away, post-haste.

Had one in Starbucks one day that by the time I was done questioning him, had most of the other customers (some veterans ad well) lobbing frags at him about his lies. Of coarse the Alpha Sgt. Last I heard about 15 million men and women claimed to have served in Vietnam during the war. I believe there was closer to 6 million that actually did serve. I run into them occasionally and find it best for me to quietly take them aside and tell them that they should not steak honor from those who were there. I had a prior navy guy in my Guard unit in 94-95 who told everyone he was a SEAL. He threw around terms you hear in movies but didn't have the knowledge to back it up. My NCOIC spoke with the personnel NCO who dug up his 214, and (surprise!) there was no mention of BUD/S anywhere. Not sure if he got called out, but the dude was a complete tool. You have to be careful calling out "stolen valor". Sometimes what they are saying is true, but a bit embellished or remembered through a lens of pain and PTSD.

Saw a green military person get on a homeless guy about stolen valor because the homeless guy was wearing a purple heart. Yeh. The homeless guy left most of his mind behind in Viet Nam. Don't go saying anything negative unless you KNOW they are lying and using it to get benefits that are not due them. If somebody is just talking, let them talk. If that is their thing. Whatever.

What is always fun is to get a person who is in the military to start "sea story" time. In other words, one upping the story just told. Is that stolen valor to brag about stuff that probably didn't occur or didn't really occur the way the person is telling it? Like making themself the hero?

Most combat vets I have met, don't talk about their combat experiences nor brag about how they are heroes. When I was a police officer, a local Navy vet claimed he was a Navy Seal. I checked with the Navy Seal Association and he had never been a Navy Seal. He was in the Navy as a cook. I don't know why a person claims to be a member of a special forces unit when they are going to be exposed as a fake. They need to be doing a little hard time in the pen. Some fakers have never served period. One showed up in Houston years ago at a Mayor's ball dressed as an Army General with medals from all over the world. He got called out on it. Don't remember what became of the case though.

Call the local police/authorities - Some states have laws that prohibit this sort of thing if the "stolen valor" is being used to obtain some sort of benefit, like a discount, or employment. It could be considered fraud. If the person is just walking around telling tall tales and wearing a soup sandwich uniform, the US Supreme Court has ruled that this sort of action is speech protected by the 1st Amendment.

Unfortunately the only thing you can do is to let others know he is a fraud. Don't associate with him and call him out when ever he makes the claim. You would be surprised how quickly it will get around that he is not who he claims.
What he has admitted to can be challenged. Ask him to present his DD-214, in front of all when you knock him down a few notches in front of those he is trying to impress. Other veterans will come to your aid in this if they have the knowledge of his fraud and before long he will shut up and be embarrassed.

On the subject of stolen valor... Is a former service member who served during Vietnam Era but didn’t actually go to Nam, and calls them self a “Vietnam Veteran” rather than “Vietnam Era Veteran” guilty of stolen valor? I ask because the Fort Collins Laramie County VA office insisted there was no difference - and that offends me, even though I’m only a Vietnam Era veteran.

Fraud is fraud regardless of the underlying circumstances used to support it, whether it is education, experience, military background, etc.

We have an organization that works daily to out Possers claiming to being Special Force aka Green Beret. Usually averaging two a week, some several different times. They should be proud of their service if they served at all. Anyone with a GT-110+ can try out starting with SFAS and if selected the Q Course but it takes time usually 18 months just to be awarded the long Tab. It’s easier to read about SF, buy the bling and tell the untrue stories. Only someone that’s been through the training and having served on an ODA could tell the difference. I could ask one question and know instantly if the individual was a posser. For example what replaced NEBO. The answer is classified and the only way to know the answer is to have been given the classified class.

I recently had someone accuse me of not being a Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) nurse on a Politicians site to try and discredit me. When I found the link of the USAF video of me treating and taking care of my patient in plane, they said that they did not deny me being in the military but said CCAT was too highly trained for me to do it. It took me several hours to find my certificate and post it. They still came after me then some other CCAT nurses and techs I worked with chimed in and he went away. People need to be very careful with accusing people unless they know them. Otherwise they can hurt others. I have been advocating for other veterans and working with the State American Legion, AMVETS and VFW since I have retired. I don't know what their motive is for attacking me while I am helping other veterans but it was strange.

I would say just move on with your life. He will be caught again...eventually. If you have already reported it and nothing is getting done then you are not failing. Sometimes there is only so much you can do. Im sure you have reported it to someone already. If they failed to act try again and go up that persons manager or supervisor. Document when you informed them as well. Tell them how many times you reported this. Other than that, you cant do much else....legally. We can send Gunny Hartman but he passed away (RIP Gunny) or Don Shipley after them (but he mostly deals with Navy SEAL stolen valor.)

In my world, I have only run across one such instance where anyone has, to my knowledge, done anything of this kind. However, that one instance would certainly answer to my idea of what to do should I ever encounter another. This situation occurred on the train from New York City to New London CT while on my way to Submarine School. I was with two other young sailors headed to the same school. One of my Seaman Apprentice friends had gotten hold of a Qualified Submarine Pin (Dolphins, silver) and had put it on to impress his girlfriend. The other sailor and I both cautioned him about wearing that insignia, that he had not earned, and he laughed off our warnings. During the trip, we were approached by a 1st Class Engineman who wore the same pin as my friend, and was of considerable size and heft, who asked my friend with the submarine badge what boat he was on, and how he liked being on submarines, and lastly why he was just a Seaman Apprentice. Finally, it came out that my friend was not "Qualified," and the big petty officer simply tore the "dolphin pin" right off the man's uniform and delivered a very blistering and colorful lecture about assuming undeserved awards in the Naval Service!! Believe me, I never forgot that episode, but I certainly know how to deal with any future similar circumstance should it occur!!!!

Most of the men in my family had served in the Military. My Grandpa,My dad.my uncle...Now I have this Gentleman on my face book says he is serving in Itac,but yet he is asking for money or my ctedit card.I am apposed by this action from this guy .the way he is imposing as a Man in the military. I need to find out if he is actually for real or not.I need help.Who do I turn to about this...Without the getlmen who is on my face book knowing that Im checking his credentials about his being in the Military.If he is not really in the Military he needs to be stopped.Please help.

My sister's husband is a fake Marine. I called him out but that made difference. He's getting a military discount at Harley Davidson dealership and Geico insurance. He made a benefits letter and signed Renee Szybala name to get out of work. I've got a copy of the records request that shows no service records found. I'm tired of his BS and he's the fake vet that tells your experience in as if he did it. I don't know who to report it to. OIG said go through regional office but no one's gotten back with me. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated
