How do you deal with someone trying to call you "Stolen Valor"?

So for all the vets here, how do y'all deal with someone trying to call you "Stolen Valor" in a polite way? Even if they are being aggressive about it? I've been out on a MEB for almost a year now and there's a store in my state with "Superhero Parking" for Vets, Active Duty, Law enforcement and firefighters, while I haven't parked there yet, I'm sure once I do someone will attempt to say something about it. I have my VA Card and my driver's license says Veteran on it and I have an entire album in my phone with pictures of my army times. Now what if this isn't enough to get them to back off? How can I politely tell them they're wrong and to drop the situation?

I don't think it will happen. Yes, there are the rare viral videos, but it's just not the social norm.

I'm sure I'm not the only one dreaming at the chance to lock up a crusty retired CSM calling me out for parking in the Home Depot veteran parking and then pull out my CAC and demand me he show me his.

But that's not how the world outside of my head works ;-)

In the day to day world your veteran license plate frame is enough credentials.

The most I was able to do in terms of call anyone out was at a local gun range. They give military a discount, and the guy was trying to BS his way to a discount with the clerk. He pulled out dog tags or something.

I interjected into the conversation between him and the clerk, and showing my CAC ID I said, "she want's to see this".

It was a little bit of awesome but not YouTube worthy.

Personally, I’ll never have that problem. When I wear all six of my ribbons, I call it REVERSE stolen valor. People say, “You should wear ALL of your ribbons and badges,” and I say, “This IS all of my ribbons and badges.”

But seriously, showing someone a VA Health Identification Card ought to settle it. (And if you don’t have one, you should get one. And if you’re not a disabled veteran (at least 10% disabled), you can get one anyway. And if you’re not at least enrolled with the VA...you really should be. Just to get your name in the system. Someday you’ll want benefits, home loan, GI Bill for college, something, and you’ll already be in.)

Or another score-settler may be your driver’s license. Some states will print something like the word “VETERAN” on your card if you show them a DD-214. Technically you could carry around a copy of your DD-214 with you, put seriously, who does that?

And then, not to blame the victim, but what was the veteran doing that made someone accuse them of stolen valor? Wearing the wrong uniform to the wrong locale? That’s how people get called out. Nobody will bat an eye if you wear your nice stuff to your sister’s wedding. They WILL ask questions if you wear half a jacked-up ACU to the community college.

But in general, if one vet calls out another, it ought to be easy to sort out. There are a lot of super-easy questions that can identify the imposter (“Where did you graduate from your MOS school? What Basic platoon were you?”) that can establish credibility. And if they still don’t believe you for some reason, and you’re going to see them later, tell them you’ll bring your DD-214. If you’re never going to see them again... forget about it. Like you said, just be polite about it and don’t get in a fist fight.

I wouldn't worry about a hypothetical argument or about a confrontation that hasn't happened. You have valid ID to support your claim. At the end of the day that is enough to be compliant within the letter of the law. You can't change human behavior. You might be confronted, you might not. They might believe you, they might not. You can't change how they will react or how they think. Don't twist yourself into a knot about it.

That's on them. You don't "owe" anyone validation. Other than a couple videos on facespace and twatter, I've never seen it happen in person. Personally, I'd pull my phone out and start videoing them. They're always brave when behind the lens. Flip the script on them.

A real funny thing to do would be to buy up all those "commemorative ribbons/medals" and walk around wearing 10 rows of nonsense.

Not a single one is a regulated award issued by any of the DOD branches. They all straight up look legit and mean absolutely nothing. In fact, I bet they are marketed specifically for Stolen Valor. No valor, ergo not stolen.

I don't see a problem, really. If you're in the category to park there, no one has a right to challenge you for it; but if they do, I'd just ignore them. Depending on their approach however, I MIGHT be inclined to show them your driver's license with the Veteran indicator. I have disabled Veteran license plates, so that wouldn't be a problem for me I suppose. The only time I park in one of two Veteran spots is if the handicapped spaces are taken.

Just speaking for myself: I would only use a parking space like this if it was the only one left, not that I’m ashamed of my service, quite the quandary, just because I come from a generation that is uncomfortable accepting gratitude for my service. I remember walking through airports with boarded up USO areas wondering what it would be like to serve when these places were open. I guess this time period conditioned me not to accept gratitude. I have never had to worry about it - and my DV plates prevent a lot of issues. I DID have one clerk give me flack about parking in a handicapped space. (On MOST days, I walk pretty normal, despite the pain and she couldn't see the back of my car and KY only has rear plates.) I simply ignored the first comment, and the second one I invited her to check out my license plate. She shut up.

That is how I generally handle that type of thing. Ignore the first comment. Maybe even the second, depending on the situation. If they insist on being persistent, calmly but firmly provide your proof (in your case Driver's License), and move on through your day.

I have the "Veteran" identification on my Tennessee drivers license. They had to get a copy of my DD214 before putting it on there. Plus I have my V.A. ID. That is, if they pushed the issue. Very few go to that extent. Usually it is only the idiot attention seekers that bother. I choice would be to just ignore them and they will go away like a fart in the wind.

The couple times it happened to me, I simply said "Silly Wabbit" ala Mel Blanc style and walked away. Think I was wearing a Seabee ball cap. Plenty of internal brain freeze going on to not be followed. BTW, no REMF recruit wannabe is worth pulling wallets or phones out. It's their headcase, not yours.

I'm sure there's a more polite way to do it, but here's a story for you. I'm a civilian again now, and when I travel I typically carry an older ACU backpack one of my old recruiters gave me. It was free, it's still in pretty good shape, and most importantly, it fits just fine in the overhead compartment on an airplane. Instead of my name and such on the front pocket Velcro, I put various different country's military rank patches the same equivalent as my own. It's a hobby of mine, so I collect them and like to show them off as they normally create positive responses and dialogue. One time a couple years ago though, some numb-nuts in the airport tried to call me out as "stolen valor". I laughed at him and asked him why he thought that and asked who he was to make such a stupid (and obviously uneducated) accusation. He looked at me bewildered, like he couldn't believe I was challenging HIS credibility. Realistically I don't even think he was a Vet because he thought some of the foreign ranks were unit patches. Anyway, I guess my answer would be to tell them to go piss up a rope. As long as you do the right thing, you're good to go. I've never had time for "spotlight rangers" anyway, whether that person is a real Service Member or Joe Citizen.

What makes you think it's going to happen? Have you seen it happen to others?

I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless it happens. If it was me and I got confronted, I'd ask them "do you work at this store?" If they say no, I'd walk away. If they say yes, I'd show them my proof that I'm a veteran. If they didn't believe me I'd say "Well I'll just take my business elsewhere then." Probably let their manager know too.

I tend to not worry about things that haven't happened or outside my control as much as I can.

I refer to those parking spots as integrity parking. You are the only one who can truly judge if you can park there. If you fit the profile then park there. If you don't fit the profile then don't park there. The only one who can judge you is yourself. If challenged by someone politely tell them to call the police. Only handicap parking is legally enforceable. Walk away and keep an eye on your vehicle. Discretely take a picture of the person with your phone if you feel it is warranted. If you served, you do not owe anyone an explanation of service. Your integrity is your only judge.

Actually it seems to me very few people actually care if anybody served. I occasionally get a "thank you" from somebody who happens to see my retired ID card, but it isn't more than once or twice a year. Ask them where their Veteran proof is and what makes them so smart that they KNOW you are not a Veteran? More than 80% of what I did is not in my records. I worked exclusively for an Admiral. He swore that nobody would ever know what I did. I also agreed not to accept any medals for my actions other than the three normally shown with Vietnam Veterans. When I left his domain I had to sign a 50 year non-disclosure agreement before I left his command. I have I.D. cards from Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, U. S. Navy, Together We Served, the Veterans Administration, etc. If that isn't good enough, tell them to go to hell.

well i have a disabled Vet plate on my truck. and if it's cold enough i will wear one of my tankers jackets with everything on it. i'm also a member to Brotherhood of Tankers and a founding member of USABOT (another tankers group on FB) and a member for the Master Gunners Association. when my wife was alive a few years back, when she came home one day after her dialysis she told me a guy there was wearing a Stetson with his rank on. well i took her to dialysis the next time. and while waiting for her that guy came out. i went over to him and started a conversation. i can't remember how it unfolded. anyway he had the Stetson on and he was way to young to be a brigadier general yeah he had one star on his hat. and before i could say anything, he told me he wore it in honor of his father. i was going to ask the wife to find out what his last name was. but the next time i saw him he wasn't wearing the Stetson anymore. i'm not going to call anyone out unless i see something that is totally blatant that it is stolen valor. like these guys that wear class A uniforms with every medal in the system on.

I was called out for stolen Valor twice. First time while I was confronted by my squadron executive officer, when he thought I was "too young to be a Vietnam veteran and in the same breath for wearing the PUC (Presidential Unit Citation). A quick review of my awards and decorations record set him on his sorrowful way of just being a failed SAC missile weenie. Second time was by a one enlistment NAVY vet for having a Vietnam War veteran decal on my car. I politely told him I earned the right by my service in Southeast Asia. People are on the lookout for Stolen Valor usually in all the wrong people. Stolen Valor monies will go overboard on awards and decorations. They think nothing of wearing forty silver stars, five to six Air Force Cross/NAVY Crosses/ARMY Distinguish Service Crosses. And then add on the highest-ranking enlisted stripes they can buy at their local Army-Navy surplus store.

I am 63 years old. I wear a baseball cap that says Iraq Combat Vet. I’ve had some folks think I’m stealing valor for wearing it because they think I’m too old to have gone to Iraq. Politely, I tell them I was deployed at the age of 50. If they don’t believe that, I quietly pull out my DD214 and Retirement ID and explain it to them. So far, all but one apologized for their claim.

I would probably avoid spaces like that, I'm sure the concept is well intentioned but it would bring attention I don't want to deal with for the most part.

As for how to deal with it, maintain a calm and respectful demeanor. If the situation becomes threatening fall back, make sure you and loved ones are safe, and document as necessary. It's not worth aggravating yourself over the way I see it.

I don't like stolen valor, but I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince people. I know what I did, and the people that matter know what I did. If some Vet or overzealous supporter is going nuts over a misunderstanding they probably need some help and that's not your problem.

However, I I would simply respond stating my MOS 11B1V, most likely would understand, if not I would use the description. I have been called out or questioned twice since I retired 31 years ago.

1. I was in mess dress at a formal dining inn ceremony the night before commissioning my son.

I was in full uniform authorized at the time of my retirement. I had just finished talking to an old
acquaintance from a military school who was now a Colonel and Wing Commander. Two young Lt.s approached me and asked why I was wearing from the wrong medals. I had to explain the regulations you could wear the current medals or ones authorized when you retired.

2. I posted a photo when I was 70 wearing full uniform as a I had worn in that day at a funeral honoring a retired Marine CW4 who worked for me for 15 years. Another air force member attacked me and said I was wearing a purple heart and didn't even know the correct location. It wasn't a purple heart, it was a training ribbon. It because comical because i only replied once but several members corrected the member including a Major I had served with.

I would respectfully ask them what is it they think I stole. I would then reach into my glove box and produce my last photo as a Command IG. See, now you have much more than me for proof. I served in the Navy from ‘86 to ‘92 & I don’t have a VA card nor does my drivers license say Veteran on it. No pics on my phone cause we didn’t have cell phones then….. lol. Besides a small tattoo on my arm that’s a Eagle perched on a anchor with “USN”, i got nothing. They can ask me questions about my time which I could answer but even then it was a long time ago & some info might be a little fuzzy. Does that mean I’ve stolen valor cause I don’t have enough proof? First, anyone who grills you about your service needs to check themselves, really. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone about my service. If someone ask me in simple conversation then I don’t mind talking about it. In fact I enjoy it but if someone ask me multiple questions cause they don’t believe me then there might be a problem….. usually a fat lip….lol

Although I will confess to on occasion wearing a baseball cap that alludes to a certain portion of my military career, the military, just as any other occupation, functions often on a “need to know” basis. That same personal and professional bearing and discipline helped carry me through my second career in law enforcement and is still with me today; so is “need to know.” It is with me today and will remain so.

I am now retired, and, subsequent to retirement, disabled. That being written, do you really need that parking space?

I have my VA card, my state Driver's License which states VETERAN in red at the bottom, and a State-issued Veteran plate with the Army seal on the left side. I haven't had anyone try to call me out, but my plan is to simply ignore them and go about my business if they do, because unless they work there or are police personnel with a reason to see my credentials, I need to provide them with NADA.

I totally get this. I have been challenged several times, more than I can count because some people are still stuck in the 19th century thinking women don’t serve. I have also been on the other side where guys walk around in jacked up uniforms asking for discounts and such. I worked in a gun and tackle shop for a bit and saw some crazy stuff. What makes the individual think your stolen valor? And who is the Individual?
This sounds like a what if question. If you were MEB a year ago you have discharge paper work (DD-214 or other make a small copy of it and carry it with you. Show him you DAV card. The parking is not free you earned the right and you have to show something. If they are not happy with that walk away you owe them nothing.

Well , I wear a ball cap that says US Army, and in smaller letters it says WWII Vet. Now I was born in the 60's and my grandfather's and one grandmother were WWII vets as well. Please note the US gov is the entity that considers me a WWII- Vet. -figure that out, LOL ;). Note: I never ask for a vet discount or even bring it up anyone(sometimes I do use a vet parking space though). Some people will ask where/when I served , etc, and I tell them.That is about it , Unless they want to talk shop if they are fellow vet themselves. I don't mind listening to what others did or what service they werein doing whatever.
I have had one person call me out on the WWII wording in about 3-4 years, and I did not bother to explain. He said a couple cuss words and walked off in theother direction.
Now if somebody(s) actually got in my face, I would explain to them why and how , I wear that hat with honor and I am"authorized" to do so. It is an interesting story and it is the truth.
If somebody stayed in my face or knocked the hat (off my head)/assualted me or menaced me, about it or just being a vet they would quickly find out , they messed with wrong vet , and I would not care who the hell they were, - GWOT war-hero ,retired E9 , O-9 , or just some new nut punk vet or fake-vet. We're all the same and same rank after it is over with(PFC)-LOL. As to others claiming whatever or even stolen valor fakers , I simple don't care. I am not Don Shipley, I can listen to BS for a while till I walk off. Some of it is funny to me .

He was never charged with stolen valor. But got charged with theft because they said he received money he wasn't entitled to. He was. Not only was he he is a purple heart recipient. I haven't had that problem, asyet, to deal with. A few surprised civilians who didn't know women had been actively serving for nearly the whole 20th century, so an old lady could be a vet. But since somany of our records were lost back in the '70s in that St Louis fire, it's really a chore for us to prove our service even to the VA, let alone some civilian knothead. As for those younger vets or ACDUs, if they demand proof, I have a valid DD 214, & THAT's all they need to know.

About 10 plus years ago I was in Lowe's. One of the employees saw my hat or T-shirt, don't recall which. And asked if I was a Veteran. I said yes, Army. He asked if I had been to Vietnam. I said no. He then told me he had been to Vietnam. And that I was not a Veteran. Unless I had been. I looked at him puzzled and just walked away. Wondering how a Veteran could think that way? It finally dawned on me reading this posting, he was probably a poser. So possibly a "stolen valor" bozo was calling me out. :-)

First off, you don't owe anyone an explanation of your time in the US Military. If someone questions your service, tell them that you have your documents to prove what you've done and tell them to kick rocks. If someone complains because you park in a spot designated for "Superhero Parking", ask them to prove their service and see if they get offended or not. It's no one's business what you or your service records can prove. Unless you are attempting to obtain something illegally, parking in a spot designated for Veterans does not require proof. We have parking spots designated for Purple Heart Recipients all over town where I live, I don't get mad and question whether someone has one or not, I know I do therefore I will park there if the spot is available. I can prove what I have, can they? What does irritate me is when I see family members (not the Veteran) using the Disabled Veteran plates or PH parking spots without the actual Veteran present, they have not earned that right, the Veteran has. I had a woman ask me once why I parked in a handicap spot at the Post Office one day, I literally was on my way home from my doctors appointment for foot and ankle surgery and was wearing a walking boot. Her exact words were "you don't look handicap" to which I replied "well you don't look normal but here we are". I asked her if she was a Medical Doctor to which she replied "No" so I informed her that my medical history was none of her fucking business and walked in and checked my mail. Again, you don't owe anyone an explanation for anything. Show them if you want but you aren't obligated to show anyone anything unless you want to.

I personally have not experienced this problem. I generally would tell that person to go fuck themselves.I served from 1969 to 1971 with 1 year as a grunt in Vietnam. I have taken several albums whith photos. They are on line at---alphaco.us---. If they want to look them up they can. I do know of a fellow from my hometown who claimed that he was a Vietnam combat vet but his age didn't work out with the dates of the war. I checked him out and found that he was in the Army and served honorably in Germany. It is pretty easy for a combat vet to tell if someone is faking it. I just let it go and figure that if this person is an asshole, let him be an asshole.

I’ve been asked about being in ACU pants walking into Walmart. College age kid (college town) walked up and started asking me about my service while his gf was bringing her phone up. He asked y MOS, so I replied to him as I have at the VA, gave him my MOS code. Saw the blank look and smiled and just rattled off units and stationed until his eyes glazed over and told him to have a nice day. He busts out a sorry as I walked away. I was Honorably separated from the USMC Friday, August 13, 1965, after having served FOUR(4) years. Having joined at 5'6" and weighing but 105 pounds, and at time of discharge 110 lbs., I was one of the smallest male US Marines to have served. Before anyone comes back with, "I served with one smaller", please note height combined with WEIGHT! In the 56 years since I have been questioned to any adverse degree but twice. Seeing as how I suffer from 'small man' complex I tell them, "If it is that important to you, why don't you call the proper authorities and have me arrested"? I would love to see that!! You are asking what you should do about something that hasn't happened. So far, it appears this is only in your own mind (guilty conscience?).
It you are or have been evaluated medically, then you have served and should have nothing to worry about...unless it was something self-inflicted, which I doubt.
Until and unless someone in authority challenges your use of the parking spot, I wouldn't worry about potential problems from other people. If questioned officially, your VA Card should be proof enough.

I hardly ever park there either, but I do have "Vietnam Veteran" license plate frames on both my vehicles. And I've got Army Vietnam Veteran license plates on both my vehicles. I carry my VA ID, a copy of my DD-214's (both of them), and hardly leave home without wearing my Vietnam Veteran cap when I leave the house. I've recently formally requested a Purple Heart, because I had not gone in for medical attention in May of 1969, because we already had 17 men medevacked and were therefore short handed during combat. I am now having surgery to have an old shrapnel wound cleaned up on my thumb due to never having it properly cleaned and stitched up, that's been bugging me for over 50 years now. I have at least five stiches in my arm from that same incident, stitched up by the Battalion Surgeon in the field. He didn't have time to stitch my thumb and our battery medic was just killed (Fred Paddleford - look him up on The Wall). Recently before the scheduled surgery they x-rayed my hand and found a 7mm piece of shrapnel still buried in the palm of the same hand. Now I find out I could have had free meds through the VA with a Purple Heart that I was reluctant to get some 52 years ago, and free renewal license plates every year for my vehicle through the State. My request for a belated Purple Heart was rejected. Take advantage of what you've earned comrade, no one will give it to you. At least small children actually address me on occasion and thank me for my service. It usually brings a tear to my eyes.

I had a lady at a Charlotte, NC Harris Teeter supermarket snidely remarking things like " You knooooow those spaces are for Veterans riggght?" after I parked, as she was following me to the door. I am able bodied, so I usually park a good distance away in parking lots even if there is parking spots for veterans. I don't even take advantage of the free meals on Veterans Day. I am retired Air Force and I have a Retiree ID Card, retired veteran License Plates on my car, and Veteran on my Drivers License. So I haven't been accused of Stolen Valor. Then again since I don't actually take advantage of any veteran promotions that a business may have there is nothing to accuse me of in the first place. As far as accusing someone else of Stolen Valor. I really don't care what someone else is pretending to be as long as they aren't harming someone else. Especially in todays age when people are pretending to be everything under the sun. They don't even know what sex they are anymore.

I've parked in "Veterans Only" spots plenty of times and never been challenged. In the event that you are confronted by a persistent ignoramus, just keep calm and show them your veterans ID if they. I've handled it a bit differently than most would online when I was told that 'if you'd served the you'd know'........ and in person I'd handle it the same way... and that is to ignore them. Go about my business and let them think what they want.

IF it got to the point where I was 'forced' to tell or show them it would not be a nice conversation.

Some VFWs like to always drop it in conversation and wear the 'badge' on their shoulder and I have no issue with that... but some don't. So if I'm cornered by a civilian then it's an easier confrontation... if it's a fellow VFW then, for whatever reason, I'm not so okay with that. (ya, it seems like it should be the other way around but I guess I just feel like we should know better?)

I've never had anyone doubt my service by just telling them so I'd assume they'd accept me simply telling them... if they challenged me then I'd be less 'forgiving'.

If it's someone who's business it is to be sure... for example getting a discount or parking or something like that, then fine... that's part of their job and they're protecting that honor but there is ZERO reason for someone other than that to challenge me.

*** I have never went to the VA to get a card or anything... I have nothing but a DD-214 that I obviously don't carry around. Nobody has ever asked and I used veterans parking ONE time in all these years. hahaha

I would ask them, what do i need to prove to you. I have nothing to prove to them or anyone. Anyone who knows me, knows my story, and what I have done. And then I would kindly tell them to move on, and mind their business. Their are far too many people who never served that think we as Veterans, service members feel we are entitled. I can relate. I am Vietnam veteran, (H Co.Ranger trained by 5th Gp.) But never went through Airborne school prior to that, or Ranger school Stateside. Instead we volunteered for "selection" a tough 3 week course that saw over 100 candidates try, and our class had 7 survivors. After that I served for 6 years with 20th Gp, jumped with them, had orders for Mobilization for Panama, Gaddafi, others..but the point is I am not tabbed anything,. I am "scrolled" am in Special Forces Association, and Rangers Association. And almost.got.into a couple of fist fights with REMFs who as you said tried to.call me out. I was vetted by National at.Ft. Bragg and Benning/Ft. Lewis (2nd Bn) finally it came down to what someone above said about Dr. Seuss, and I found that the ones who talked loudest and were most upset, had never really done shit downrange, if at all.

Long story short some dude in my neighborhood was trying to start an arm citizens patrol in response to all the chaos right before the January 6 White House incursion, coincidence? I do not live in a high crime area and there’s absolutely no reason for a bunch of tennis club people to be patrolling my streets with automatic weapons and I said as such on the community app we were communicating on. He started bragging about his military career and he was a third-year retiree and referred to himself as a sheepdog. Presumably the rest of us are sheep. So I looked him up on social media and saw that he was basically an Air Force mechanic. No disrespect Air Force mechanics, they perform an invaluable service, but this guy was out of line. Anyway he started investigating me and saw my LinkedIn page Which I hadn’t updated ever. So he started pulling that with me, he got very heated he sent me his address and dared me to show up on his lawn. Anyway, it went pretty far and I do regret the whole interaction, but yeah, I would still like to meet him and kick his butt in a grocery store parking lot. Just on principle.

Ignor parking in those spots, that hero shit really burns my ass, those who gave the lives saving other troops under fire are heros, americans, though only 1% actually serve need to be respected, given all the benefits thire qualified to receive raised to 100% so thire place in the normal work force loss is rewarded. The parking junk thing is like the parades to me, merely for corporate self-aggrandizement between store managers for PR. Use handicap, have tags, in California thry fine those who violate, and most veterans have disabilities and specific tags that must be qualified to put on vehicles. Of course a veteran questioning me would be awkward, but civilians have zero status, just give thrm my grimus look and walk away. Unless you're telling some BS story about how you were a E-12 or a medic in the Marines, no one who is also a veteran will question your ability to use a parking spot. You come with boy parts. Unfortunately those of us who come with girl parts are questioned all the time. Occasionally I wear a baseball cap that says "Retired Army" on it. I've had several people tell me to thank my husband for his service for them. My husband never served in the US military. He doesn't even speak English. A lot of people are shocked to hear that we have women serving in the military. It blows their mind to hear that we've had women serving in the US military since the American Revolution. Though prior to WWI, they served disguised as men. Some were caught only because they were either wounded or killed in battle.

If you have an ID, it shouldn't be an issue for them. Like you, i have ID and etc. Takes a bit to get one because they vet you out. (no pun intended). I don't think you can get a VA ID unless you're a) a vet and b) honorable discharge. I don't think pictures really matter or the scars for that matter. While i haven't had this happen to me, it does make me wonder what i'd do. Not sure i could be polite about it after showing my ID

Do not worry about it. As an Army Vet I can easily tell by MOS, duty stations, place for basic or AIT, and any valid questions. Your identification etc are enough. Also join a Veterans organization. The organizations also do so much good for Vets.

It is rare, but it does happen. I usually say something like 'Have a nice day' and walk away. If they persist, after a few questions they seem satisfied and will go away. As an older soldier (I went in at 40) when I was in Uniform, people would look twice at the old specialist. On base and in my Class A uniform, my Antarctic Service Medal would raise a few eyebrows and more than once I had to stand before someone else's CO or CSM to explain that; yes, I did work in Antarctica, it is also a civilian medal and I am allowed to wear it.

Personally, I am long past the point of caring what anyone else thinks. If you feel like you deserve to park there, why do you feel the need to justify yourself to some random stranger? I used my GI Bill for a psych degree, so my reaction would be to turn around and start drilling them about what they think gives them any right to question me because people tend to tend to imagine others doing things that they would do, or have done, themselves. Unless they are a cop with some valid reason for questioning you, you really don't owe anyone else an explanation. Your license plate should be enough. I certainly wouldn't show a stranger an ID card with any personally identifiable information or let them hold my phone to look at pictures. Thieves are very bold now.

I have parked in veterans only parking spot at local Homedepot several times recently and have had other veterans who were total strangers come up to me and start conversation about our service time together during Viet Nam war. Never have that been negative. I can mostly tell Nam vets by their age.

In PA, you can get a license plate that identifies your veteran status and also get a veteran's designation on your Driver's License. I have never ever had a problem and have received respect several times when I have parked my truck and walked into a business.

More often than not, people want to believe what they are told and what they see. Unfortunately, there are some bitter people (and trolls) who just want to smear everything they can. I have a large 18" vinyl Navy Combat Action Ribbon on both rear side windows of my SUV and the words "U.S. Navy Combat Veteran." I've had people approach me at the gas station or while parking at the grocery store to say thank you for your service and shake my hand. I've had more than one lunch paid by the car in front of me at a fast food restaurant with the cashier telling me they wanted to say thank you. So I say, park in the spot. You just might be surprised and the POSITIVE responses.

Confusion can fall upon a veterans legitimacy today due to the changes in equipment and terminology amongst service. A more recent veteran refers to M.R.E.'s as "Meals Ready to Eat". Or " Meals Rejected by Ethiopians/Everyone"!
My era was Viet Nam, and Post Viet Nam. It was "K Rats", with it's required "P-38". No, not the W.W.2 Fighter plane, but instead the little hinged aluminum, sharpened manual can opener.
The military should provide a guidebook on era's, equipment, terminology, especially "In country terms, or God forbid, you may kill another vet.

Personally, I'm more disappointed at MEB for trivializing our services to our country by labeling us with a cartoon character moniker.

As far as being questioned about our service, a simple and polite response to their mistake should answer appropriately. If it doesn't, show them your id and asking them not to be so rude next time. Use it as a teaching experience if you can.

Don't worry about what if. I have a retired AF tag on my car so it is never an issue with me. My wife does not but when I am with her I park there. Should someone approach me and ask, I would tell them first, it is none of your business what/when/or if I served, Second - I don't have to prove anything to you or anyone else, Third - go piss up a rope and then walk off. I don't challenge others but I have seen some that I thought well but it is not my place to ask, it is an integrity issue for me...I served so I can and will park there...if they didn't then well that is on them, not my place to challenge. I will and have challenged folks parking in Handicapped spots that there is no way they are handicapped physically at least, plus they don't display any placards or license plates to show they are eligible. That bothers me more because I have family members in wheel chairs and elderly who can barely walk and get by and need those spots and are legally able to use them and then some @$$ hat comes along and takes the spot that they need getting out of an unlicensed car and running in the store.

I have a disabled veterans license plate. If you see me parking in a handicap spot it's because I really need to that day. Most of the time I try and park out in the lot and walk. Some days the back and knees from my Airborne days just don't let me. Point is I've been question before about using handicap spots. One guy was an ass from the beginning and after his repeated "you don't look handicap" I replied "you don't look intelligent enough to understand" and walked away. His expression proved my statement

I wouldn't give them the consideration of responding to their comments. Ignorant people tend to make ignorant comments. You know who you are and what you did to earn the right to be called "Veteran". Personally, as a 100% disabled veteran, I wouldn't park in the "superhero" parking space because I have the license plates and placards that allow me to park in the designated handicapped spaces.

Personally, I would never park in a space reserved for "superheroes" because as a 100% disabled veteran, there are other reserved spaces that I can use.

The quickest way is tell them to call the police since it is a federal offence. Then let them know it is also illegal to give a false report and they could be arrested as well. If they do call them and they arrive show the officer the same information and let them handle it.

Although this hasn't happened to me, it's probably just a matter of time before it does.
I think that if someone ever decides to take it upon themselves to accuse me of stolen valor, I will challenge their resolve with a monetary wager.

I'll make a bet with them for a few hundred dollars regarding my veteran status. Everyone will see just how quickly they back down when realize they actually have something to lose. It would be funny to see them back away from their unstable accusations as they are forced to put their money where their mouth is... as I contemplate how I will be spending their money.

Well, at least that is how it plays out in my imagination.

This is like getting in an argument over how to spend lottery winnings that you haven't won yet. Are you upset about the possibility that someone might approach you for parking in a veteran parking space? You are upset about something that hasn't happened yet? You do know that those types of parking spaces are merely courtesy spots, they are not legal in the same sense as handicap spaces. You can not be fined for parking in one. It's not illegal for non "superheroes" to park there.

I don't know what makes you think someone would call you out for rightly parking in a spot you earned, but I park in those types of spots all of the time and no one ever said a thing about it. I don't necessarily mind a fellow veteran asking about my service, especially if they disclose first, but any civilian who attempts to challenge me can go pound sand. I already fought for you, I have no desire to fight with you.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING THE THE IDIOT. Tell him/her to take a long walk off of a short pier. Also, the store should discontinue the reserve spots and convert them into handicap spots. I understand them wanting to honor people, but idiots will cause more issues than it is worth.

Doubt you will ever run into it. "Stolen valor" videos usually spawn from obvious deficiencies, not parking spots.

I own several vehicles, 2 have a Disabled Veteran plate with a Handicap Symbol (free) and the other with a regular Army Veteran plate that I pay for. Unless you're Law Enforcement, (which I am retired from), I will March on and ignore you because you're most likely not being polite to me and I see no reason to be polite back. I have been out of the Army since 1992 and I'm itching for a confrontation, lol.
