Both Bush Presidents Worry Trump Is Blowing Up the G.O.P.
The author went on to ask George H.W. Bush what he thought Trump was seeking in running for president, and the former Navy war hero responded by saying that Trump had "a certain ego." Though George H.W. Bush told the author he thought Trump could unite the country, he said it would require "humility," which the former President told Updegrove was a challenge for Trump.
"If you look at the Bush family, it makes perfect sense. Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not," Updegrove told CNN's Jamie Gangel. "George Bush grew up thinking about the greater good. Donald Trump is manifestly narcissistic. It's part of his brand. And that brand is the antithesis of the Bush brand."
George W. Bush echoed his father's sentiments when he told Updegrove, "As you know from looking at my family, (humility) is a certain heritage. That's what they expect, and we're not seeing that (in Trump)."
Updegrove told CNN: "When Donald Trump said, 'I am my own adviser,' Bush thought -- and this is a quote -- 'Wow, this guy doesn't know what it means to be president.'"

Sorry ... but neither Bush can claim perfection ... though I give higher marks to GHWB than GWB. I do wish that they both would ... keep their traps shut. I held my nose when I voted for both of them when they ran for their second terms. Neither lived up to my hopes ... or expectations. I'll go further ... neither Bush has the credibility, IMV, to handicap Trump this early in his term ... when they kept silent during the entire eight years of Obama's tenure. Pretty despicable. IMV, all they are doing is venting because Trump outdid Jeb. Too bad, so sad, suck it up.
Humility? He has to be kidding. Sending a humble man to the District of Calamity is like sending a Chihuahua to a Pit Bull fight. Remember that image of George Bush when he arrived there and was greeted by Teddy Kennedy. George was going to attempt to get along with the Democrats in Congress the way he got along with them in the Texas Legislature, and they knifed him at every turn. Apparently, he hasn't yet felt the pain of the knife that Teddy was sticking in his back in that picture.

More so than allowing one person running the entire show, Captain Jack, especially a man of Trumps character. He operates in the here and now, acts and speaks impulsively, and seems to have no idea what the impact of his decisions will be. Everything is about him.....nothing else matters. That's not a good formula for a leader at any level.....let alone leader of the free world.

SSgt Gary Andrews - all bureaucrats answer to the President. He alone is responsible for administering the government and they are his employees hired to do just that. Do you understand at least that much? However no President can"lead" an unconstitutionally bloated government such as we have. It needs to be cut back to it's Constitutional limits. Until we clean House and Senate, we need someone to make as many cuts and keep the reins as tight as possible until We the People get him some help. It's going to be a messy business and if you can't stomach it, I suggest that you look away

Gosh, Captain Jack....my little pea brain is struggling to comprehend the whole employee thing.....but I think I get it. Do you at least understand that when an employer says he doesn't need any help and he alone will do it all.....that is a recipe for failure of massive proportions? Maybe you can do it with a family business, but the U S Government is far from that.

SSgt Gary Andrews - you're taking this way to personally, so I'll just leave you to enjoy yourself
We elected Bush as a President NOT a political brand name, he needs to get that straight in his head. Bush would have won a second term if he didn't have to fight the Media along with the Clinton Campaign. One of his biggest problems was Bill Clinton co-opting his political ideas and claiming them as his own. I also remember the Media calling him a WIMP even though he served in Combat. Bill Clinton also promised the country a NEW DIRECTION for the Democratic Party one that was not as radically far left as we were at that point (look where we are now.....it is even worse). Honestly I firmly believe Trump has broken through several false barriers that seemed to exist to the Oval Office. The fact that once again anyone can run for President and you do not have to be a professional politician I am sure has sent a shock through both political parties (their farming system can be circumvented). The fact he can speak plainly without the equivicating diplo language crap is a refreshing change as well. Despite the negatives he brought to office with him Trump has changed the political landscape for the better and has restored the path to the Oval Office again to a broader source of potential candidates.
I think it is really arrogant to imply or even say outright that either Bush reflected Republican ideals 100% when they both represented the Liberal wing of the Republican Party. Reagan was not a fan of Bush as I seem to remember and even made the statement publicly "He doesn't seem to stand for anything". Despite the First Gulf War it was hard to find any points during the first Bush's Presidency where he took a stand on principal. It was mostly wishy washy luke warm.......warmed up mush of a leadership style.........nothing like Reagan. Reagan had every totalitarian regime on the planet peeing in their pants scared of what he would do next. We had threats of war but nothing beyond a 1-2 week operation really.

I went to a speech by GHW Bush in Berlin in about 1983. Honestly I swore to god he was a closet case. He sounded very wimpy in contrast to Reagan and would show emotion far more.
I did not like Clinton either, so one positive out of this last election is it would appear the Bush/Clinton Dynasties are dead.

I can't speak to all who voted against Bush 41 for a second term, but I believe that I am not alone in having left the GOP (and by extension George H.W. Bush) when they allied with Ralph Reed and the Christian Coalition.
the 1992 election was the election in which the religious right truly became the face of the GOP, and many secular voters like me were pushed out. We were fiscal conservatives, strong on national defense, but also pro-choice and anti-discrimination. Just as the Democratic party started to push out the Dixiecrats (Southern Racists), the GOP pushed out those of us who did not want to legislate the United States into a Christian country.
