If one can explain exactly WHY s/he needs the piece of equipment AND has the specified opportunity to use said piece of equipment, then I have no problem with it. People who buy gear just because it looks cool, or because it's what real operators use, etc. are just wasting money, because most of them will never truly get the most use out of the item(s) and will never get the opportunity to actually USE the item(s) for the intended purpose(s). For example, if you don't have anywhere to fire a Barrett .50, WHY would you buy one?

Then again, there are people who will camp out overnight to buy the latest iPhone JUST BECAUSE it is the latest. I like to ask people who do this what the differences between the previous model and the newest model are. Most of them cannot explain it, but buy them because it's the newest. So Apple-Heads should refrain from commenting on this thread. ;-)

I just laugh a little and carry on with my day. If doing all that helps them feel better about their lives..........as long as they aren't trying to pass off any stolen valor....then who am I to question?

Military service is clearly all about looks and presentation. Who are you to judge? ;)
There's a lot of sarcasm in that above statement. If they want to play airsoft or paintball and pretend they are a Ranger or SEAL or whatever on the field, fine. However, that type of thing stays on the field. The moment they walk into a bar, they are just Jake from StateFarm or Jim from the Office. You earn those dog tags, and until you've walked a mile in our boots, you haven't earned a damn thing.

When I was a recruiter I was standing in front of a laser quest. All these young men came out dressed in random parts of Army BDUs, some with patches and name tags, and going on about how cool the whole thing was. I asked if any would be interested in serving and wearing uniforms for real. I think only a couple rocks hit me in the face as they all raced off.

They're posers. It's hilarious. I served (68W) with two tours overseas. I still have many things I was issued that are 'tacti-cool'. I still have my military ID. If some idiot wants to call me out, I can easily shut them up. Members and vets have certain mannerisms and parts of their personality that you can pick up on.

Note: I was a Services specialist: 7 level Cook/Baker Supervisor, been to 'Nam and Thailand and some other places.. I
Kept the fires stoked and cooked up the sustenance for our Airmen and whoever else came through our line. Did some augmentee duty occasionally.. I let my buds do the cross-examining...
