How do you feel about teachers getting conceal and carry permits and having loaded weapons in the classroom?

Recent incidents of intruders and students targeting schools for mass killings has led some teachers to arm themselves in order that they would be able to protect their students.

Teachers should be trained to effectively handle an armed intruder or shooter event just like they are trained to handle a fire or tornado event.

They are taught . My wife has taught for over 30 years and they have intruder drills at her school all the time. They also have armed security officers. Is worthy to note that Columbine had armed security officers at the time of the attack.

LTC Bink Romanick Yet the shootings still happen, and students and teachers still die. Hiding and waiting for a security officer or a police officer to arrive is not an effective strategy. Fighting back is more effective, fighting back with firearms is the most effective strategy, given proper training. Police officers are at least minutes away, and they often arrive only to wait outside for a special unit that is even farther away. Armed security officers are good as far as they go, but they will still likely be minutes away across campus from the location of a shooting. They certainly can't be everywhere. On the other hand, teachers already are basically everywhere. There's normally at least one in each classroom, or wherever students (the primary targets in a typical school shooting) are gathered.

Although it may appear to create an environment of safety to deter idiots, what happens when a teacher shoots a student that makes them feel "threatened"? Or an idiot student takes the gun and uses it on the teacher or a student? I think having a more effective school security would be a better option and entry control.

That is true but still I stand by my perspective on the current issue. As servicemembers, we survive on 2nd and 3rd order of our decisions.

Most teachers would handle this competently. I really hate that we have come to this point. Home, church, and school should all be safe zones but they aren't. We are living in times that we didn't want to ever be in.
