Yes the flag of the United States of America should not be altered CPO John Jacobson for any reason. If this is a real picture I hope the "flag" was taken down and destroyed with whoever made the flag dealt with appropriately for defacing a flag.

CPO John Jacobson I do not like it, but if the supreme court has ruled that burning the flag in effigy is protected speech, then this has to fall under the same thing. I do not think this is nearly as bad as someone wiping their ass with the flag, burning it while stomping on it or any of the other things that have been done. I don't like it, but I am firmly against infringing on rights guaranteed by our constitution, so I have to tolerate it.

Don't do it. The flag needs to keep the stars and bars like the original. People have tried to change it and the rainbow colors, I understand it's part of the gay movement but everyone is not gay. There is very specific circumstances where the coloration of the flag can be altered in my opinion, such as the black and white flag used for uniforms to blend in better. This rainbow crap though, I would be lying if I said it didn't annoy me. Not only have the changed the coloration but they altered the stripe count. I know what they're going for but if they want a symbol to use as their way of celebrating their freedom then why not use the normal American flag which is supposed to represent our country and our freedom? Seems like a pointless alteration to me.

I honestly think all of us service members/veterans agree that this flag annoys us at least a little bit (whether you want to admit it or not). However as some others have pointed out by this point it is no longer an American flag. As long as it doesn't start flying in front of government facilities I could care less.

I myself am an LGBT individual and agree that the alteration to the american flag is disrespectful to the country. The stars could probably have been left off of it, but it is not like they they are petitioning to have the American Flag changed. Its just a supporting icon... I see things like this up here at Lewis all the time....especially with the blue and lime green colors for the Seahawks. Ive also seen the black and blue police flags. At the ROTC program that I'm temp cadre with, a lot of the Greek organizations do this; they have flags with their letters in the Union area and then the stripes in their organization colors. Personally it irks me (especially since being Greek myself, I know frats and some sororities have their own flags) However there's really nothing that can be done. They haven't modified an actual American Flag so to me, even though I find it annoying and kinda stupid, it's no harm no foul. If an actual Old Glory was to be modified to fit another purpose however, that's a whole different story.

The people getting bent out of shape over altering the flag to the point where they are advocating arresting someone or harming them might need a lesson in what "freedom" actually means. This shouldn't a totalitarian state where you can get arrested for disrespecting or perceived disrespect to the government or its symbols. In the 70's and early 80's, you couldn't turn on the news without seeing some Arab or European burning a bed sheet painted up just like the American flag. I learned early on not to worry about what other do with "their" flag. My flag sits outside my home, in front of the base HQ and on top of the capitol building. It's draped over a hero's coffin and it's the one that I reenlisted in front of. As long as folks are not breaking any fire codes, I could care less what they do with Their flag.

that's not a modified US flag.... the US flag has a blue field with 50 white stars and 13 stripes alternating red and white... that flag has a blue field, with what i assume are 50 stars, i don't care enough to count them.... and only 6 stripes, rainbow colored.....

CPO John Jacobson I guess I'm to set in my beliefs, thoughts... I think there are some things that should not change, that said, our flag has changed over time and it's bound to happen again. What if Puerto Rico votes to become a state? Then we will have 51 states and have to add a star. This doesn't bother me however some changes and actions can be and are disrespectful. I personally find it as offensive as I perceive any modification as well as desecration to symbolize disrespect to the flag. Would be even though they are legal. Since its legal i respect the right to display it; I just don't personally like it. As someone else has pointed out, I have no problem with the the correct display of a separate American flag with the rainbow/LGBT flag. (would be displayed like an American and a state/organizational flag with the LGBT community displaying their community emblem as part of the USA.)

I don't care for any modified versions of the American Flag, period. If you want an emblem, make a new/unique one. This one is clearly using the blue field with 50 stars from the US flag and then the standard bars from the whatever they call their flag.

I don't care for football teams doing it, political organizations doing it, rock bands/country bands etc. I see flags with Eagles, John Wayne, Willie Nelson and many other images printed over the bars portion of the flag. I can do without any of them. I know people have the right to do what they like just as I have the same right to call BS on it.

The amount of people with zero creativity in this country is legion.

ANY desecration of the American Flag such as turning it into clothing, modifying it for personal, organizational, or religious reasons should be against the law and are not acceptable. I don't care if it looks cute to someone to add things to it, it is a reprehensible act and morally wrong. Countless Americans have spilled blood to protect the American flag as it is. Freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to cheapen their deaths by making it more politically or socially correct. Citizens of this nation do not pledge allegiance to the modified flag of the times, they pledge to the Flag of the United States of America. If you feel so strongly against that US flag that you have to change it, you are more than welcome to leave the country to those that can respect it. There are 194 other countries that you can move to and try to change their flag to suit your personal wants, needs, and desires.

Some valid and invalid points on this topic.
My question remains - why the f*** do I have to know your sexuality? Why can't this flag have it's own pattern (like the original with horizontal stripes). I don't support LGBT as they bring about more division among us, and more often than not in an inappropriate way. I've seen things in San Francisco that I cannot unsee, in public - disgusting, but hey, freedom, I guess (everyone does whatever the f*** they want).... I don't see any heterosexual movements/flags, etc... God forbid a parade, all would be arrested for indecent exposure, and public disturbance...

God, I hate political correctness and hurt feelings - I'm offended that they are offended (or whatever group makes claim to offense in general), and I feel like inflicting pain upon them. Irony of "free" speech (I'd be the one carrying consequences, not "them").

4 USC 1 says: "The flag of the United States shall be thirteen horizontal stripes, alternate red and white; and the union of the flag shall be forty-eight stars, white in a blue field."

"Old Glory" should not be modified unless we are adding a new state...for instance Puerto Rico or Guam. Not saying that will happen but that should be the only modification to the American Flag in my opinion.

The flag cannot be modified and still represent the ideals represented unless the people choose new ideals.
What should concern us more is the perversion of those ideals and using the flag to represent them. The acts that cause people to hate us damage this symbol more than any physical change to it.

I'm all for freedom of speech, except perhaps the church that demonstrates at fallen Soldiers' funerals. Other than intentionally inflicting more unnecessary pain on the suffering surviving family members, things like this are actually understandable to me. I think this actually communicates something pretty clearly pro-American, at least in their eyes.

Many flags have their origins by taking elements from other flags. The US flag has some of its origins from the British Union Jack, which had its origins from the flags of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The flags were blended together to show the merging of three countries, ultimately into one. That being said; I think it shows lack of originality and creativity when you must co-op elements from another flag to create your own. If your particular cause really is a "unique new idea", then you should adopt a new symbol/flag/trademark to represent your "brand". During the 1700s, the "Join or Die" and "Gadsden" Flags were unique from the Union Jack. To put it another way, if we followed the same rules as corporate logos or trademarks, there would be many copyright infringement lawsuits based on others co-opting elements of the US Flag for their own pet cause.

If you want to be "special, unique, & different"; then design your flag/trademark so that it is "special, unique, & different".

The flag of the United States of America should not be modified under any circumstances, other than those performed as a result of the actions of the Congress acting in full compliance with our Constitution and the traditions of our country. The only modification I can honestly think of at this time would be the addition of another star, representing the addition of a new state. Once any other modifications are performed, by anyone other than our Congress for whatever reasons, that modified flag ceases to be the flag of the United States and does not deserve the respect due to our national symbol.

I see this as the gay pride flag modified to show it's ties to America. This is not an American flag for obvious reasons. In actuality all flags are just a piece of cloth it's the people who fly them that gives them their meaning and importance. this flag belongs to the LGBT pride movement and anyone who supports it. As members of the Armed Forces, we fight as Americans. Not as gay Americans, not as Confederate Americans, not as Americans from North Carolina, we are Americans. Read about our flag and you will find that the 13 red and white stripes have meaning and are part of the heritage of America and being American. Not enough history is taught in school now to perhaps know this, but a little digging on the internet may enlighten you. No modification to the flag is needed. I'm from Hawai'i and we have some unique herritage, however, we are Americans first, and I would expect when I die that I will be draped with an American Flag and not a Hawaiian flag.

I'm opposed to modifying our nation's flag. Leave Old Glory as she is. If we adopt another state, add another star. Otherwise, let her be. We fought under her, some died and came back under her, and all of us have honored her with our service. She's been a proud symbol of a great nation for a very long time, and a traditional national rallying point. Some aspects of America must change with the times. Our flag isn't one of them.
