This week audio of President Clinton was released saying that he could have killed Osama Bin Ladin on Sept 10, 2001. He stated that there was an opportunity to kill him in Kandahar, although he didn't take action because it would have meant possibly killing 300 or more civilians in the surrounding village. Some have been critical of his decision saying that it might have prevented the events that followed hours later, and others say that the outrage was over blown because he could not have known what was going to happen.

He COULD HAVE but the fact is he DIDN'T. Just like he COULD HAVE sent in the equipment MG Garrison requested in Somalia in 1993 but the fact is he DIDN'T send it.

How I feel about it and I stress "I" is I think he made the wrong decision and the world has paid for it over and over with the men and women that have died !

The article states that his statement was made on 10 Sep 01, 10 hrs before the attack, during a speech he gave in Australia that he could have killed him in December of 98. I was a bit confused by the headline as well.
Not defending him, or denying him, just making a point of clarification.

LTC Paul Labrador reading comprehension, he stated on a speech he delivered on that date, that while serving as the President he had the opportunity but did not take it. He did not state that he could have acted on that date.

Cpl Ray Fernandez , there is nothing wrong with my reading comprehension. This is what you wrote "This week audio of President Clinton was released saying that he could have killed Osama Bin Ladin on Sept 10, 2001."

As it was written, the preposition "on" is linked to the verb "kill". It was a poorly worded sentence. Had you written it "This week, on an audio release from 10 Sep 01, President Clinton stated he could have killed Osama Bin Ladin....." then it would have made more sense.

What if Hitler had been killed on the Western Front during WWI? Who would have gotten credit for that and would WWII have been prevented.

So President Clinton was speaking in 2001 just hours before 9/11 happened about an opportunity to eliminate OBL. My real question is, if he knew OSL was suck a real threat what happened between 1998 and 2001 that OSL never met his fate under Clinton and why was he mentioned just hours before the 9/11 incident?

Master Chief, I'm convinced that the government knew something inevitable was imminent. So many strange events happened shortly before that day. Coincidence or not, the US was looking for a reason to start something. US intentionally lowered its guard. The punch was delivered. The rest is bloody history

There was evidence since the mid 90's that some type of plan involving aircraft was in the plans, originally they had uncovered evidence of a plan to strike against the west coast using hijacked plans in Malaysia. Part of the problem is that you had one agency that had a tip on one thing, and others in something else but the unwillingness or inability to share intel kept everyone from putting the whole picture together.

Just like in the DOD, everyone wanted to make Mommy and Daddy (Congress and President) think they were the best. That would then result in a bigger budget and more prestige for their agency. Hopefully (and I do not have that much hope) this thinking has been replaced with team work since then.
