How do you feel about the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and its members?

I hear diverse responses about SAMC and its members. Does this club really make a difference in the Army?

MSG Private RallyPoint Member, I am not familiar with the SGT Audie Murphy Club. But I am very familiar with SGT Audie Murphy did in WWII. He was a hero in the truest sense of the word. If this club encourages selfless leadership and that each soldier should remember he/she is a prat of a team then I think it would be a good idea.

Meh. A buddy of mine made a fake squad book using his brothers and sisters so he would know all the birthdays, kids and names, backgrounds. Always thought it was kind of bullshit after that.

MSG Private RallyPoint Member I've met just a few SGT Audie Murphy Club Members, two I would say. Once a SFC told me that he had a SGT in his prior Unit that made it to the Club, her career skyrocketed and their Unit headaches started. She had more time out of the unit that the time she worked there, going to breakfasts, lunches, etc. in DC, and many other places. He told me that they couldn't count with her and, at the same time, couldn't replace her. That's all I've heard from the Club.

I’m a SAMC member, inducted in 2004 as a SGT, Fort Bliss Texas, so my opinion will be somewhat biased.

When I was going through the process of being inducted, I had to go through 5 weeks of study groups with current members and the CSM from my Battalion, had two Battalion boards, one BDE board and then the final installation board. By the end, I was primed and ready. The NCO’s that were already members consisted of many Battalion and BDE CSM’s, 1SG’s on down to a guy like me. I didn’t meet one NCO that wasn’t squared away. We had monthly meetings and participation was heavy. We participated in various community and installation events. There was always something going on with the club. The bond I developed with SAMC members has lasted even though now that I am a Chief Warrant Officer. I have help prepare potential SAMC candidates at each of my units since I have became a Warrant Officer. I feel that the SAMC club offers the NCO a chance to develop their social, leadership and mentorship skills through emphasized community and unit involvement. I know some NCO’s earned the medallion just for networking and promotion purposes and if they did that, they are dead wrong. Does it help set yourself apart from you peers, the answer is yes, but that’s not what the club is solely about.

I have always had a good experience with members of the club and am actually attending the boards in July and August. This will be my third attempt to be inducted into the Club.

I was Ft Hood's Single Soldiers 2000 OIC. It drew 30,000 people, so it was a big deal. We turned large fields into a parking lot for 5,000 cars. The SAMC volunteered to take care of the parking detail which was immensely appreciated by team of planners.

It was a dream of mine since I was a PFC. Not only because of Audie Murphy's incredible story but I just admired those who actually competed and set themselves apart from their peers. I was inducted last December after almost a year of preparation. Although I am not as active as I'd like to be, I still believe in what the club represents and I look forward to the time (hopefully next year) when I can provide more for the club and mentor future members.

Audie Murphy is one of the things that I want the most. I have never had much interaction with the club or its members. In my opinion it seems like it is kind of like being a Mason, if you want to be one Ask one. Ive heard it jumpstarts your career, Ive heard it doesnt. I don't agree with the prerequisites to attend the board however. Im not a beliver that scoring below 290 on your APFT means you are a crappy leader but Ill save the soapbox speach.

To be a member is one of the greatest things I have done. It really keeps me on my toes. Your always learning, developing your leadership skills, and evolving as an individual. It takes you out of your comfort zone for sure and that's when you know your building upon yourself.

I can not get enough of the club it has connected me to the community and people I was never connected too. It puts you next to the positive and strong leaders to show you how things are suppose to be done. The kind of environment that you need to be in to push you to your limits. Shows you how to take care of others which is hard if you don't know what to do. For example to put together a induction ceremony. What does this do for you and others? Your organizing something bigger and better then just your company taskings its battlion, brigade, and divison events. Putting together a volunteer event getting people involved with their community. This club is for a good cause. There is so much I want to do and not enough time. This is why I love being an NCO. The club and its members and what we can do togeher inspires me.

I am very passionate about the club I can go on and on.

My take, the best NCO's in the Army who deserve that medallion never end up in front of a board. They're too busy taking care of Soldiers and making mission happen. They're on mission. TDY. Deployed. Counseling. Teaching. Leading. Taking care of other NCO's Soldiers and missions while they are studying for boards so they can have great NCOER's.

I've known several Audie Murphy Club members. 3 of them talked a good game and had "friends in high places". Not one of them was an excellent mentor or good leader.

They spent most of thier time planning events for the club and schmoozing with other members, and little time actually working in the unit.

1 even went so far as to tell all the Soldiers that "If you want to get promoted, I can get that to happen, but what are you gonna do for me?".

I have known members that were fantastic Soldiers as well, that put massive effort into the unit and the unit issues. Those guys were a pleasure to work with.

But I've known more members of that club that were poor quality and self centered individuals.

Since his mother was my grandfathers sister, I’m quite biased.
The soldiers that achieve this great honor are the best of the best, and I’d be honored to serve with any one of them!
