Especially in a National Guard unit. If your unit doesn’t have a H8 slot on the MTOE you won’t be going anytime soon. Although if your unit does have recovery personnel, then do your best to latch on and learn as much as you can. Express to your leadership that you’d like to go to the course and work on the recovery team. Also hard work and keeping out of trouble won’t hurt.Response by 1SG Private RallyPoint Member made Sep 22 at 2020 5:48 PM2020-09-22T17:48:41-04:002020-09-22T17:48:41-04:00CW3 Kevin Storm6338242<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I can speak a little to this process, if you unit has a wrecker, it should have slots for H8 crew people. If the slots are filled, it will be hard to get in there. So let your NCO know you want to go there, and ask to be assigned to the wrecker. Dog the NCO every month to find out status to see if a school seat is available. Units can submit for school seats prior to the start of the new fiscal year (Oct 1), or least get the ball rolling. If you get a school seat you will go to a State Run school for the course, as this is far cheaper then sending you back to Fort Lee, which state I cannot say, but their are several Regional Training Sites Maintenance (RTSM) around the country. Excel to be the top of your class as a mechanic first.Response by CW3 Kevin Storm made Sep 23 at 2020 3:12 PM2020-09-23T15:12:38-04:002020-09-23T15:12:38-04:00SGT Roberto Mendoza-Diaz6339277<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Well in my case I wanted to go to South Korea instead of Fort Stewart so my DS send me to the H8 class while my orders were getting changed. I was AGR with the reserve in a QM Co with additional duty as a Instructor on a readiness group team I taught mamance at five state National Guard Command I has the H8 ASI indentifier there were know H8 slot on the company MTOE after a numders of break down when the unit was on a mission I prepared a memo and address the issue and submitted a DA Form 4187 to my career counselor and pointed out that the training was part of my career progerssion didn't even go throuhg the unit chain of command FTSM in St Louis allowed the AGR personnel to contact their career advisor directly then schools was needed as long as you could justify it. It worked with the National Guard some but it was harder because many times it got to be a money thing plus the National Guard didn't want a AGR Reservist telling them what to do. Any military unit Active Army, Reserve or National Guard suppose to have recover support when they go on a exercise in orter to operate the recover vehice you have to have the H8 identifier and that what the regulation say. Ig your unit don't have a recover vehicle you have check one out from the equipment storge warehouse I was a motorsergeat for 16 year with regular army before I was ask to become AGR.Response by 1SG Sadatna Setuckmarie II made Sep 26 at 2020 10:46 PM2020-09-26T22:46:48-04:002020-09-26T22:46:48-04:002020-09-22T17:44:00-04:00
