Ironically, MAJ David Vermillion, RP is not immune to these intrusions either. Twice in the last two days, I've been messaged by an obvious fake profile, asking me to contact him. I flagged him to RP and they took immediate steps to eliminate the profiles, thank goodness.
However, I think that RP may be headed toward a situation where civilian scammer profiles become more and more prevalent. I don't know what RP plans are to help stop this, but I don't believe that self-policing by the membership is the answer. I would hope that RP will begin to vet civilian membership in some way. I don't know how they'll do this, but RP is no longer the safe haven that I thought it should be. SSG Carlos Madden LTC Yinon Weiss COL Mikel J. Burroughs LTC Stephen F. SSG James J. I saw the RP promotion on Fox's "The Five" a few days ago, SGT (Join to see). Dana Perino gave RP a nice plug, which was after her "discussion" on RP. I was most appreciative of her endorsement and I'm hopeful that wasn't the reason the scammers started their attempts to scam on RP.

LTC Stephen C. - I can't think of another reason it would suddenly pop up on RP. I don't think it's a coincidence.

When I joined I thought it was military only, but now I find it is not. I have lost much interest as I thought this was military only and now find it's not.

As one of the Admins killing these fake accounts, here are my suggestions.
1) Ignore/delete/do not reply to any message that looks to be a scam.
2) Provide the name(s) of the sender(s) to RP by messaging one of the admins (we have stars by our profile pics), by sending an email to [login to see] or by clicking on the "Feedback" button on the right side of the site.
3) Give the system time. RP is a growing and changing community and things of course take time to perfect. I saw SGM Mikel Dawson's comment. Trust me, there is a lot of conversation behind the scenes about what civilians should and should not be able to see or do on this site. I didn't like the idea of having civilians on here at first either but then I realized that RP can be a great tool for military dependents and caregivers seeking answers as well. The wealth of information here on RP is amazing so it can be a great resource. I'm sure we will be seeing some changes coming down soon to help address this issue.
And as always, if there is ever anything I can do to help the community of users here at RP, please let me know. You can tag me or send me a private message and I'll try to help as fast as I can.

I don't even bother to engage anymore, MAJ David Vermillion. If it's a telephone number we don't recognize, we don't answer. If it's an email address we don't recognize, we delete it without even opening it. Being a decent human being is low on many people's priority lists.

Great advice for us all. We still have people out there that think they can get a "Pot of Gold" just for participating in the scam. What's sad, some know it's a possible scam but think that's somebody else. Have a plan and stick to it. You have a good one. Thanks.

LTC Stephen C., I us a free system called NoMoRobo. If it's a spam call the phone rings once. If it's friends or family it rings the normal rings you have it set to ring. When our phone rings, we wait to see if it rings again. It's nice to sit here and ignore the one ring.

I've had many of those irs calls, you owe money and we'll put you in jail, I just play along and keep them rambling then after some time i'll tell them to send me the documents and i'll cooperate that will usually piss them off more, then I tell them to go f*ck themselves, no more calls and ilmao

Yep, and IRS says they never make contact that way, You get calls like that its not them and don't ever give or send them any money, its a scam !

It probably so intimidates certain people that it is worth it to the scammers to cold call people. I always try to hang up PDQ when I figure that it is a scam. I have gotten a lot of those calls from "Microsoft" that my computer has some issue but I never let them finish their little speech.

SSgt Robert Marx - sometimes its more fun to lead them on then drop the hammer, once they get busted its even funnier

MSG (Join to see) I got one of those calls and was able to gather enough info to report to IRS, Within 2 days the news was reporting the takedown in India of that scam. However I do enjoy playing with the ones who tell me there is a problem with my computer, I tell them I don't have one and they are incredulous. I then proceed to explain how a pencil and paper work. Another suggestion us to answer "Hello! You are on the air!"
