I am currently volunteering my time as a web developer for my divisions association website (34th ID). Also became a member at the same time too. After talking with a few of the "veteran" members in the association, I come to find out that the association is dying.

I was recently (Tuesday evening)added to the committee to help save this organization and to help get current soldiers to join the organization and help preserve the accomplishments that "Red Bull" soldiers have done since its inception.

Once I joined the NG and became a member of my states division, I immediately fell in love with our heritage and all that this division has accomplished since it was formed. I am real passionate about it and would hate to see this association fall.

Just like the VFW and American Legion, veterans from current wars are not joining these organizations, and service members aren't visiting these organizations often to have a couple drinks and share stories and experience, similar to what WWII veterans were doing.

Now I understand in this day in age, we have all technology at our finger tips and we are having more and more personal and family issues to attend to, so my question is this:

What are your thoughts on keeping some of these organizations alive?

We have regional meetings, national meeting. Emails and believe it or not phone calls just to say hello and I see you are still alive.

A group of us smoke cigars together also.

The simple things work

Yeah I am currently working on template email to send to all the commanders in the state (after get approval for mass dissemination).

What would you do to get new members to join SSG Rushlo? Do you think sending a rep from the association to every unit in the div (annually?) and have a presentation talking about the association and entice people to join?

We have a bring a friend, or in most cases bring another VET night. The only way you get in that night is to bring some one with you. Yes send that rep with a 3 minute and 5 minute dog and pony show.

oh I like that idea of bringing another VET/service member. Maybe to entice it more, give a good discount to food/drink/admission when you bring another service member that is not a member.

That's not a bad idea as this same question came up in my own talks with older VFW members. Nobody had a clue on who would take over when the commander of our Honor Guard, who is the Chaplain, finally passes on and it was suggested that one of the other board members would know. In the area that I live, the towns are made up of mostly retirees and daily working joes who do not have the time to put into these organizations and it does have me worried as very few people know what is going on in their own organizations.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
