How do you most effectively operate with your leadership when actions demonstrate they care about OER bullets not their soldiers?

WO1 Private RallyPoint Member - You are the proverbial buffer spring between those who issue the orders and those who execute 'em. Accomplish the mission; Take care of your troops. As a young Lt, if you do nothing more than focus on that, you'll soon enough be a staff officer whom the Lt's can grumble about.

When all is said and done, people remember the kind of man you were, not your squeaky clean and impressive record. Too many leaders forget that.

I know it doesn't answer your question, but I understand the frustration with your particular issue.

WO1 Private RallyPoint Member - Just continue to do your job to the best of your ability, accomplish the mission and take care of your troops, and all will work out in the end. Those who care more about OER bullets will be identified and eliminated down the road, while those who actually care more about doing what is right will continue to progress. Hang in there, LT.

I am currently under a similar command. What I've been doing is shutting up and coloring as I am told. Over all I try to do what is best for my Soilders and that they are getting taken care of as much as my PSG and I can do. Also, take mental notes of how not to be. Good luck.

Grab a good NCO, work with him/her regularly, listen to your NCO's about issues, address issues, maintain your integrity, honor, strength, courage, and gain wisdom. Leaders are like the weather, they too will change. Do what is right and honorable, the rest will take care of itself.

I have an Lt that talks to me often, about many things. Being an E6, I see and hear lots. We keep covert channels going to make sure everything is taken care of, we smile a lot, and we do our jobs, even if it is us being the behind the scenes guys. Never take anything personally... please do not make that mistake!

Nice to see that this is still happening in today's military. I had several sessions behind closed doors with officers during the day. Never forgetting the divide, there are ways to hammer home the inherent fact that taking care of the troops under them while accomplishing the mission, is THE paramount responsibility of a leader. Getting promoted at the expense of your troops is unforgivable and does follow a person through their' career via the SrNCO network. We always know who the good officers are.
