Saying "you're welcome" doesn't sound right to me since they aren't exactly thanking me personally. The fact that I served usually comes out of a third parties mouth and then this happens. I try not to project that I served because I don't want attention (I'm not ashamed, I'm just not a people person and conversation isn't on my strengths list for my personality)... When it occurs I usually just thank them for their support which is usually followed by a puzzled face from the other person in which you can tell they are thinking what to say next followed by more questions delving into things I'd rather leave in the past. But I digress...
