How do you train and record Army Warrior Tasks?

AR 350-1 states, "All Soldiers (E–1 to E–7, WO1, WO2, O–1, and O–2), on active duty (regardless of component) will complete [Army Warrior Tasks]AWT annually." For the Guard/Reserve its every 3 years (I think).

How does your unit satisfy this requirement AND how is the training recorded? Do you print out a bunch of Go/No-Go sheets and stack all of the training in one day round-robin style? Who, if anyone, records the training for a Soldier in DTMS?

Edit: I'm speaking at the Team, squad and platoon level here. [Thanks SGM Cunningham] DTMS is mentioned as I thought all AWT training eventually was recorded there.

Back in the day Sir it was on the training schedule and a sign in roster was filled out and the CO signed a memo stating who was proficient!

ATN has all AWT's as well as guidelines. Training should be documented in DTMS after instruction is completed.

At what level are you asking. DTMS is the answer for company level and up. If you are asking a squad leader or PSG, then the answer will be different.

They should be keeping a record of the AWT on DTMS.

What we do is when we sit down and build the Co YTC we integrate AWT into training (usually 1st and 2nd QTR). Obviously DTMS will produce the task, conditions, standards etc, and obviously it is imputed into DTMS after the fact for the CDR's Assessment. It is directed down to Plt level for PL and PSG to ensure that A. Tasks are done to standards B. All resourcing is done at Plt level (except for IWQ).
At my level(PSG). Myself and PL task SL's for specific tasks and assist with the planning and resourcing of events.
We have too much to get done with what little time we have each month so we spread out the tasks and ATTEMPT to tie it in with any METL training we have going on.

DTMS is the answer. You can log all Warrior Task that have been completed. That way you can keep track of what needs to be completed for whatever you got going on (i.e. NTC, JRTC, deployment, etc.)

Here's the thing. All of these skill level 1 training tasks are taught to new Pvts at BCT and its tracked by the drills on up. So let's not reinvent the wheel here and delegate it to the platoon level. Depending on how many soldiers you are testing it can take approxamently 28 hours to complete and that's with 240 new Pvts.

I record my section's training in my leader's book. Then I follow up with S3 to verify that stuff is put into DTMS..or sometimes enter it myself.

My platoon just did this recently. We had all the soldiers carry score sheets thru each of the lanes once they were complete we did a memorandum for record for each task and a list of the names that completed each task and it worked pretty efficiently.

Use ATN for all guidelines and training performance measures and a spreadsheat with all the Team/Squad/Platoon names on it to track T,P,U and remarks on it beside the task. This will allow for tracking and any refreshers on performance during training

We keep track of all training on DTMS. As for the the specific training in question, it is tailored to the Company METL.

You would want your training conditions and quality of performance by the soldiers to mimic what they would have to do when they have to go out and do this for real on a deployment. For the training to be meaningful you could sprinkle them into your training schedule a few at a time. Some tasks can be done at the squad level and some should be done at the company level. When I was in we would go to a parade field and do training all week until completed. But the way we did it was more check the block versus being relevant meaningful training. If you could actually have some resources like a training area where you could bring your soldiers and just focus on completing this training in an actual training area being able to utilize both night and day the training can be done more realistic. This would actually be good for the soldiers to meet the big Army requirement and become more proficient so they will be familiar when you actually have to deploy them.

You are required to checked every Soldier trained by creating a signing roster on DTMS and then check every Soldier who was certified to a specific level so you can track who need to be certified.

I’m so old I had to Bing DTMS to see what it is. When I was in, basically 1983 to the mid 1990’s, we tested MOS skills on regular paper exams and received a grade for it. If dig hard enough I could probably find a few old grades I received. I’m sure the grades were tracked in some computer system.

At the lower ranks, hands on means more: can you prime a block correctly, can you tie the correct knot for the situation, etc. Rating bridges for load carrying capacities and stuff like that in my MOS are more suited to paper/computer exams.

The Army keeps track of everything, I’m with SSG Gary Jerking, don’t reinvent the wheel, use what you have until something better comes along. I’m seeing a few “We Don’t” out there. Time to stand to.

This is a challenge for the reserve compos. When I was on active duty we would kill time in the motor pool by completing these tasks. When I joined the ARNG it was no where near as easy. The issue with any training in COMPO 2 and 3 is time. If all of your "required' training was really completed by everyone and to standard then you must have a very small unit that does nothing else. You need to be creative and have numerous Soldiers training at once (often not possible if the task requires training aids), all of this is why the ARNG units often do not have completed DTMS records until they get extra time due to a mob or NTC/JRTC rotation. I know I did not answer your question, but just like everything else in the Army it depends on the unit on what the best way is. I have found success by having multiple laptops and recording it as you go. Often this means personal laptops.

Ideally it runs this way:

You as the commander submit your quarterly training briefs for approval. Every aspect of training should be included (AR 350-1 training as well) and input into dtms.

Every time your unit conducts training the dtms clerk will generate a roster and add those individuals who train. Everyone signs in and when the training is complete your training room will maintain the rosters as well as inputting go/no-go into dtms. During inspection, IG will check your rosters, your training plans, and your dtms input information.

My favorite way to verify a soldier was trained in their Army Warrior Tasks was that every soldier carried with them at all times their soldiers handbook. I considered that to be a part of their uniform and a soldier would be counseled if they did not have it. In their handbook, I would be able to put the date and status of their training (Go/No-go). I would also be able to add to their training tasks as needed.

Any training should be recorded by the Training Officer/NCO of the unit, whether its grade sheets or Record of Memorandum- the manual its self should mention how it is recorded.
