SGT Private RallyPoint Member - I'm going to echo some of the same advice given to, don't be that guy to wear your ASU to prom. Get a tux and just have fun that night. Yes, by all means be proud of your service but I think sometimes we open ourselves up for unnecessary comments by wanting to parade ourselves around. However, if you are cold-stone set on wearing them, download a copy of AR 670-1 and DA PAM 670-1 and read up. Do not put yourself out there without the proper knowledge first. Be ready for the questions by having the answers ready before you step out your door.

OK I'm not Army so I'll provide, wait for it, impartial?. The AR talks about what the uniform is and where it can be worn. Under the dress uniform you have:
"(4) On other appropriate occasions, as desired by the individual."

So you're not prohibited...... BUT.

What you have are a bunch of opinions on whether it's a smart idea or not and I see the "nots" who think it's not showing the proper wisdom. So my take is you're not prohibited but there's a good chance some of your seniors will think you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer. So what's a good EM to do?

Unless you are covered by your unit leadership, "Listen to the Force". Besides wearing civvies does give you some shielding from minor stupidities.

Prom? As in High School Prom? I would, as many have, advise against it. I would also be danged careful of what you do at a High School Prom as a service member.....
Be proud of your service, but:
1. You will have more fun out of uniform
2. You are less likely to embarrass yourself and the Army by not wearing your uniform
3. Did I mention that you will be less likely to embarrass yourself and the Army?
4. Think about what will happen to the great start you have on your life, and how much quality time you will get to spend with your First Sergeant if you embarrass the service.

First off prom is kids game, being a soldier is not. Please don't mix the two. Most importantly, however, being a soldier doesn't give you cool points, it's not a status quo, and most importantly it's not a way for you to impress 17 year old girls. Want to know what I hate most about new privates? They think that going thru basic training makes them special in some way, or they think it makes them seem bad ass just because they are in the service. You're not special and you're not badass. I would take the advice of these very fine NCO's who have commented saying don't wear them, it's just bad ju-ju. Don't use your uniforms as a way to be glorified for things you have not accomplished or experienced yet. You're obviously fresh in the army, wear a tux. First off, and I may be slightly off on this, but medals can only be worn in the Formal Dress class of your ASU, and any ribbon that does not have a medal counterpart cannot be worn if medals are displayed.
Second, as many have said before me, you DO NOT want to wear blues for that kind of event. here is why:
1. It is not technically a formal, let alone military, event.
2. All of your conduct, down to rubber-necking at passerby, reflects not only on you, but all of us, and our organization. Do not embarrass us.
3. That is asking for damaged uniform pieces, as you get stepped on, bumped, spilled on, etc.
4. As a split op (this is MY OPINION), you are not yet a full-fledged soldier, and should not display yourself as such, as you are not MOS-Q, or knowledgeable enough to understand the complexities of wearing that uniform yet.
and finally, 5. You are asking for embarrassing, difficult, or generally stupid questions from your peers and other civilians (have you killed anyone? Did you deploy yet? What's your number? {both meanings} etc) You don't want to be in that position.
Be proud of your service, but don't be that guy.

I'm not going to be the dream-crusher that I've been known to be... if you want to wear your blues, go with it. The regulation doesn't expressly prohibit it, just as it doesn't prohibit a guy from wearing his dress blues while he is getting married to his cat. You need to familiarize yourself with the Google-machine and check out AR 670-1 to make sure that you're doing it right. You're about to graduate from high school, so one would assume that you know how to use the Google-machine. Words of wisdom from a guy that's done some dumb stuff in his past... Don't do dumb stuff while you're in uniform. Dumb stuff can be anything like underage drinking to getting into a fight. You youngsters are pretty creative, so that list of dumb stuff isn't inclusive. A good guideline is: "Would this current action make my mother/father proud of me?" That's going to be your guideline as long as you're wearing that uniform in public. So, when some 17 y/o girl starts twerking on your junk, hide your boner and move away. The last thing we all need is to see a video or picture of you appearing to disrespect a woman (girl) in uniform. Got it?

Now... while I've got your attention. That (P) after the PVT makes you look ridiculous. Have you done anything to "earn" that "(P)"? No. There are no promotion boards, local or at the DA level to go from PVT to PV2 to PFC or even SPC. While you're on the Google-machine, check out AR 25-50. In chapter 6-5, it discusses use of the (P) in correspondence. Specifically, it says, "Do not use the “(P)” (meaning the signer is promotable) as part of a signature block in Army correspondence
unless it benefits or enhances the image of the Army. However, it may be used in an address for such things as congratulatory notes".

With that said, congratulations on a new and hopefully long career in the Army. Whether you're in the National Guard, USAR, or Active Duty, we all wish you the best of luck. Do good things and don't be a jerk.

I only wore my ASUs twice outside army functions one was for a funeral and the other when I married my wife. At the funeral I was out of place and I caught everyone's eye and answered a million questions instead of honoring the deceased memory. When I married my wife I took the attention away from her, what can I say I was a young private and I regret it. Just rent a tux match your date I'm sure she doesn't get to go all out and dress up very often. You will have plenty of time to wear your ASUs in the future, you will get sick and tired of them eventually. #inspectionsfordays

Not that I disagree with the mAjority of the advice here not to do it, but the big question is: what does she think of it? If she cool with it (and her parents to a lesser extent) and you are comfortable with it, do it as the regs state. But as it has been pointed out, a screw up in uniform can cost you a career. Oh, come on, guys, he's a very young and very new soldier who wants to be arm candy for his date. Him, in his uniform, may be just the accessory that his date wants in order to stand out.

That being said, Brother, take a look through the AR 670-1 and associated DA Pam and you can't go wrong. Besides, it's good study material and will give you a leg up at any future board or competition.

3. Seriously, don’t do it. Just remember that any number of your teachers may be, in fact, veterans. They may feel the need to take you down a few pegs. Also, once you have worn them a few times you will learn that those things are uncomfortable. Additionally, if you get into any prom related shenanigans and pictures end up on social media you will be in a world of hurt for poorly representing the Army.

I usually so not say much, how never this I could not just scan over. I will make an exception.

But yes, what the Colonel said; she is supposed to be the pretty one not you. She is supposed to be the one shining in the light, not your ASU 'medal' that you do not even have a need to have in your current possession. You have every right to be proud of your accomplishments, they are yours; you should be. Even if you still have many more impressive ones to achieve in your future. However most everyone really does not/will not care, envious, slightly jealous even. But they probably won't think about that guy that was in his dress uniform at prom 15 years ago later in their life.

Well, I guess it depends on your date. When I was a young Marine, a girlfriend of mine who was a senior in high school (she was 18 at the time) actually wanted me to wear my dress blues. I did, and she felt it made her day even more special. It really depends on the girl, but make sure she is not only okay with it, it wants you to wear it.

I had this dilemma just this last spring. I’m in college, and a girl I knew wanted me to go to her senior prom at her high school. Being a broke college kid, I thought that maybe I should just wear my ASU’s to the prom to save money. However, at the end of the day, I couldn’t stand the idea of being “THAT guy”, so I earned some extra cash working odd jobs and rented a badass white and red tux. Looking back on it, that was definitely the right decision. I would say to only wear the ASU’s as a last resort (no money, tux store out of rentals, etc)

Let's be honest, we wear our uniforms to separate ourselves from the civilian population. Son, you have next to zero ribbons and no deployments under your belt. While you may be very proud - and you should be - of your military service, there's no reason to wear your ASUs. You come across as cocky and worse yet, unjustifiably so. Wear a tux and have a great time!

Update: this was posted over two years ago, I did wear my ASUs to prom, but my then girlfriend wanted me to, and she was currently serving as well. I abided by regulations, and even removed my ASUs for the after prom festivities. Since then, I have deployed to Iraq, and realized how big of a boot I really was!

Back in 2000, I WAS "That Guy," and I wore my green Class A uniform to my senior prom. You can do it, sure. But don't OVER-do it. I would NOT advise wearing your full-sized ribbons and medals to anything but Army events, like your unit's Dinings-In or your brother's graduation from West Point. If you'd just wear an ordinary suit or tux as a civilian, or if you're going among civilians, just wear your ordinary ribbons. The full-size ones are ostentatious and distracting to everyone around you, and look like you're showing off the medals, not the whole uniform. They'll also bounce distractingly on your chest when dancing with your date.
The reason you're wearing it is to advertise the uniform itself, and the service it represents, to your classmates. Get your NCO supervisor or your recruiter to check it right, and wear it proudly, but you don't want to send the message of "Look at the Medals I Won!" at the Senior Prom. You want to tell the rest of your class that "[date's name here] came to Prom with a Soldier!"

I don't know Army uniform regs, but I say got to the prom in uniform. I'm a mustang and wore my Navy SDB "cracker jacks" to a prom and it was a hit. Remember, you will be held to a higher standard in uniform.

Am proud you think enough about your country to wear its' uniform to the prom. But don't make the night about you, make it about your date. Today those of us in uniform, past or present, are more likely to attract attention from undesirables wanting to make a political statement. Men and women who are closer to eternity than they know. Consider your GF, your date, and her feelings should the evening be ruined by someone failing to show respect for your commitment to God and Country. I too am proud of my uniform and the recognition I received while wearing it and in my day stared down my barrel, bayonet fixed, denying those seeking to dishonor my brothers, passage. I make, and will make, no apologies for the my choices on or off the battle field. I see no need to explain my commitment to country, to anyone. The ribbons I have are earned, most while under arms, need no explanation to the men and women who serve or served, and their opinion is the only one I consider relevant. Its' one night, a special night, but still one night in a life time of nights. Wear a tux, and in your heart your uniform. Don't give those who would seek to dishonor your commitment an opportunity to rob you or your date, of an experience that will come only once in your lifetime: wear a tux, don't let some lesser person make the event about politics or service. Make the evening about your date, not about you or who you are. Those who matter already know; anyone of importance knows the calibre of your metal. Make the night one to remember, a special night for you and your lady. It's not the time for a statement: that time will come later as it has for the brothers who've gone before you.

1. Full size medals are worn on your ASU IAW DA PAM 670-1, 20-7.b.(1) "...centered immediately above the left breast pocket (see fig 20–4)." "Personnel will not wear service and training ribbons when full-sized ... medals are worn." Just replace your single ribbon with your single medal in the same basic spot. (I'm assuming you have not finished AIT and been assigned to a unit yet; otherwise you have other items missing from your uniform.)
2. Wear your uniform with pride where ever you wear it; including the prom.
3. I don't know your situation. You don't need to justify your situation. Lots of good reasons to go exist, but generally most people I know tend to frown upon adult graduates attending HS events with minors. You may be 17. Your lady may be 18. Maybe you're just going as a special guest. I don't need to know the details and you don't need to justify your attendance. However, it tends to raise red flags and invoke a bit of the yuck factor. Special justifications aside, uniform or tux, I'd tell you that you're done with high school and high school girls. You should move on to college age ladies. (That does not mean you need to break-up with a long time girlfriend or reject a your special invitation.)

SPC Farley - First. allow me to salute you for being a soldier who has pride, intelligence and courage. As to the question concerning the wear of full size medals on your blues, check out AR 670-1 and if you still have questions, seek out your senior noncom leaders for their wisdom. Secondly, I want to say this to you as well as to the multitude of naysayers that wasted lots of time offering negative advice on your choice to appear in public properly dressed as a proud soldier instead of offering any advice on the question you posed. These people are not good leaders and you should not feel obligated to consider them as such. Soldiers are men and women, not children, and should be treated as such by all. I am from the old school (1960 - 1988) and I was trained by leaders that never left a question unanswered and never answered any question by an unfounded opinion. Continue to soldier with pride, wear the uniform with pride and never forget that you are, indeed one of America's best. Never met you but I would be willing to bet you a beer that your Platoon Sergeant is proud to have you aboard.

I agree with Col. Williams, this is a special night for the lady to remember for the rest of her life should be about her and how she was treated and honored by her date. Tux or suit with now bow tie, special dinner and flowers and discussion should be around her, what she likes, future ideas, opening the car door unless you have a chauffeur, pulling the chair out for her, getting up from your seat when she excuses her self and etc. I realize today's young society has a different opinion, I will just say, wake up young man/soldier this night you are not in the military per say

I remember a young man came up in my yard and blew his horn for my daughter, who was the high school queen, to come out. We were eating dinner, I never stopped eating, my oldest son went out an greeted him and advised the young man, there will be no date tonight or any other night. She did get to go to the prom with a close friend who treated who treated her with dignity and respect as she deserved.

Ok I’ve been a gray area retiree for a little over 10 years now, but is there no longer an entire Army Regulation dealing with how to wear the various uniforms and place the various awards, decorations and accouterments on this various uniforms?

I get this is a place to ask for help, but it should be for the more esoteric stuff, not something that one’s immediate leader should be able to answer.

You’ll have plenty of Military Balls (Dining Outs) to take your young lady to while in uniform. At prom, make it her night and be one of the guys in a nice tux. One question though, did she specifically ask you to wear your Blues? Otherwise, don’t wear it.

First, any concerns you have a bout the proper wearing of medals would be covered in AR 670-1.
That being said, you should wear a tux. Prom is generally an important time for young ladies, who generally spend a lot of time picking out their outfits. You don't want to take the attention off of her.

Prom is not usually a Military function. I can tell you with certainty that the AR 670-1 and PAM 670-1 do cover your situation. Like the NCO's said don't be that guy. Your uniform isn't going to give you the "hey look at me" factor you hope it will bring. Think about your date. Be special for your date and not you. It's understood that you are proud of what you do in the Service but do the service proud and follow the regulation on it. The time to wear your ASU will come. If it was a military function, like let's say a "Dining Out" or some units, a "Dining In" it would be a different story because then it is called for and authorized for wear under that regulation. If you do it though, it can put you in a tough spot that you don't/won't want to be in. You look sharp in the pic BTW.
Like in my avatar to the left, I'm wearing a black bow tie, which is allowed under the regulation, I am at a Regimental function , I see that my bow tie was off center, I didn't know that at the time the picture was taken but I had just reached up to adjust a piece of equipment... I do hope that your prom goes well.

I 100% advise against this for many reasons, some have been stated already so I won’t beat a dead horse. ASU uniform is not cheap either to replace! You’ve been issued the first one. Something goes wrong at prom and now your out a possible $500. Also, what possible full medals could you have if you’re still in HS. You’re probably a split ops trainer, which means don’t do anything that will prevent you from going to AIT next summer.
