How does it work going through airport security with your service uniform?

So i've been wondering how does it work when you go through airport security with your dress uniform on, because you have some medal on your uniform do they make you take everything off or just like your uniform coat off?

Wear Civilians, you'll avoid the groups of "thank you for your service" as well as any potential threats.

Just do what TSA tells you. Flying international: wear civvies (and that doesn't mean 9line, grunt style, or "i went to basic at Ft ____")

In my day you HAD to wear class A's, unless you were lucky enough to get Cat Z. I am glad the rules have changed.

Normally you don’t for security reasons. Don’t make yourself a target. Go in civilian clothes whenever you travel especially if you PCS to Korea or Japan.

In my day, when on orders, we had to travel in uniform. When I came back from Nam, we were fitted for new Dress Greens (Marines) in Okinawa. Then at El Torro MCAB, they made sure we left, IN UNIFORM. I spent 2 days with relatives in LA - flew home, IN uniform. I'd fly in uniform today in CONUS - not overseas.
My son when going to Afghanistan via Germany, was called by his PSG before he started his Leave. He was told to NOT shave for at least 2 weeks and wear civies with NO clothing that could identify him as American - no sports shirts, or patriotic shirts, "... becasue of the Muslim issues." Made sense, but it sstill sucks.

SSG Bill McCoy - I have had the same experience traveling CONUS in the 1970’s. As late as the ‘80’s my AFRES TDY orders required me to travel in uniform…if at a medical conference, I needed to appear in service dress….and when I saw everyone else dressed super-comfortable, I went back to my room to change into comfortable civvies…. I hadn’t heard the no-shave, but did know about the no identifiable American clothing, just as all of the European travelers were wearing American sports team shirts and jeans…..

1st Lt Padre Dave Poedel - I think the "don't shave" was the PSG's personal advice and not required. I take it the conference was being run by a civilian group. LOL .. yep, they'd ensure being dressed comfortable!

It was a much different time when I traveled from the states to the Federal Republic of Germany in March of 1969. Active duty Army personnel had to wear the class A dress greens or the summer khakis while at airports and during the flight. Fatigues and civilian clothes were verboten. TSA did not exist and no one had to take their shoes or boots off
for inspection purpose. Even though 1969 was a time of violent riots and protest against
