How does one go into active reserve or guard orders?

Im a prior service Marine who just transferred into the Army Reserve and I just wanted to figure out if there was a way to work in the Reserves as active duty instead of doing that weekend a month thing.

Yes. It is called Active Guard or Reserve (AGR). Find a position and fill out a packet.

SSG Miller nailed it for you, I would talk to your COC if their is an open slot in your unit for AGR that you are MOS qualified for some times they can do a by name request once your packet is turned in.

One caveat: AGR in the Army Reserve is like active duty; you PCS every few years all over the country, even some OCONUS posts are a possibility. AGR in the Army National Guard, you are at least limited to your state.

Yes, everything that you’ve been told in this thread is accurate; I’m just chiming in because I was in the same situation. I was prior service Marine Corps, got out, went back to school, then found out about the Army National Guard. I drilled for a few years, then I found out about Recruiting and Retention Bn. I put in a packet and the rest is history. I was AGR until my health began failing and I was medically retired. It’s a very rewarding career and a great way to get 20 years under your belt.

I've heard varying things about the whole Guard/Reserve tech thing...I gather it's some kind of "double-dipping" thing, or so I've heard, where one wears the uniform during the week, even though one is paid, and ultimately retires, as a civil servant, either state for Guard Tech, or Federal or State Tech, as well as getting Guard/Reserve retirement...I'm total perm disabled now, though I did look at it quite seriously, I hadn't known about it till after I'd gotten off active, I'd seen you'd listed AGR where you'd sent this thread, as one of the rooms you'd sent it to, I just wasn't sure if you'd known about Guard/Reserve Tech, I figured you might, I just wasn't certain, obviously, hope is of at least some use, possibly....
