How does your rank work after transferring into another branch?

I’m requesting Conditional Released. I’m an E4 in the Army National Guard, with possibilities of promoting to E5 soon. But I’ve always wanted to become a Marines, and since I’m having economic issues, I’m trying to go to an Active Component. I’ve heard that if I transfer to the Marines I’ll have only 2 more years on becoming E5 or I’ll be forced to get out of the Marines. My ETS is in December 3rd and it will be my 6th year in service. Can someone help me?

Marines will not give you very much credit for your rank. I knew a platoon sergeant E7 who wanted to join the Marine Corps Reserve back east. This guy was a master gunner so basically he was an instructor as well as a platoon sergeant. Since he works at China Lake Naval Air Station he wanted to transfer back East to Quantico or somewhere else, I can't remember and they were going to give him E1 or E2. The Marines do not accept our service School or rank. My civil Affairs unit accepted a Corporal from the Marine Corps active duty. He had been out of service since the early 80s and he joined us in 2007. He came in as a specialist and he transferred directly to Sergeant because we accepted his Marine basic NCO School. Marines have their way of doing things so don't be surprised that you go back to a private.

SPC Private RallyPoint Member Your best source of information is to talk to a Marine Corps Recruiter. Have all of your data together along with a list of your questions before you do so. Expect a culture shock.

If you go to the Marines you have to go through everything again, boot camp, mos training the whole thing. You may get E3, but a lot of guys have to do it as E2...I mean, if you're REALLY motivated go for it, but personally I would just try and do SF or 75th RR

I switched from Army to Marine Corps after my enlistment was up. Good news was two weeks later I’m in the Corps, bad news was I went from E-5 to E-2

I went from Army active duty E-5 to E-2 Marine Corps. The good news is I got promoted every 6 months. So about 1 yr and 6 months I was a Sergeant again.

As a prior Marine, I can tell you that you will definitely NOT go in as an E4. You will most likely go in as a PFC (e2), and have to go through boot camp again.

You might keep a stripe, that's about it, depending on your MOS. Count on going to Boot Camp. If you're guaranteed PFC (E2 in USMC) then you could get a Meritorious Promotion to LCpl out of Boot, if you earn it. Emphasis on could and earn, no guarantee. Any TIS limitations for rank won't apply. Clean slate unless it has changed.

Last I heard retention for a SPC was 8years- if you aren't promoted to E5 in the next 2 yrs- bye, bye.
