How easy or hard is it to get transferred to another state?

This is more of a question for people in the National Guard. I currently live in Indiana, but I want to go to college in South Carolina after I'm done with AIT. Basically, how hard or easy is it to get transferred? I do believe I'll have to talk to the person in charge of my unit, but before I do, is there anything I should get together before talking to him? For example, any papers or anything?

Sometimes your readiness NCO will be able to help you, but you need to start researching units close to your college with your MOS skill set. With you being so new they probably won't have an issue with it because you haven't yet been issued OCIE and have to worry about clearing supply

Rule of thumb when it comes to NG or Reserve units of assignment is mileage....it almost always depends on what unit is within a service members a/o...However, a unit of assignment will allow a lateral move as long as their gain/loss doesn’t affect their manpower/mission essential. But don’t stand by here say....ask first, starting with your COC....

I found it nearly impossible. I was in the Arkansas National Guard and I wanted to transfer to the South Carolina National Guard...absolutely impossible as an E-7, then I got an ulcer from my civilian job that I was working at, at the time, and that pretty much nailed my military career.

Not that difficult. Find a slot, helps if you find a unit close to where you will be going to school, as traveling comes into play. Keep in mind the type of unit you will be going to in relationship to school. What is there Annual Training Schedule lik. Not every Guard unit goes in the summer to annual training. It can end up being smack dab in the middle of a semester. Some units are good about letting you do an alternate AT, some are not. Find out up front, or not. Also keep this in the back of you mind, South Carolina is the only state left with a publically elected Adjutant General, SC is a very political NG state. Read up on the "TAG" before ever making any comments about one political party over another.

Go to your unit and inform your Chain of Command. All they do is cut a DA4187 releasing you to your new unit. Just find a unit where you live within close commuting distance of your residence that has a slot for an E-1 to E-4 in your MOS
