How'd I navigate my veterans benefits? I got the VFW Guide for Service officers and studied it as soon as I got out. Then, while in college, I kept telling all my veteran friends how they were getting screwed and what to do about it. Eventually I started accompanying them to the County Department of Veterans Affairs to make sure things were set right. My senior year in college the assistant director of that office called me to say they had an opening and he wanted me to apply. I got the job and kept getting better. I never let anyone handle my veterans benefits but me. Every veterans benefits specialist I spoke with after I started working for the San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs in April of 1974, including my coworkers, knew far less about veterans benefits than I did.

As far as vet benefits, the VA IG reports a 2 month delay in receiving private care and projects the delay will increase. all this despite the VA touting this viable option. The article appears in Stars and Stripes; and really concerns me.
