Mostly what to do. <br />Kinda backwoods out of mainstream society. Which is why I loved it. <br />Feels like living in the jungles with heat, rain, and extreme humidity. Which I did not like. <br />Little to do as a family unless you like the outdoors.Response by SGM Barry Kindred made Oct 2 at 2016 5:34 PM2016-10-02T17:34:42-04:002016-10-02T17:34:42-04:00David Pitt1943625<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I was there from 99-03 not been back since and only live 50 miles from there from my understanding they have done a lot of upgrades to it if you have a vehical lake chariels or alexandria are an hour away if you don't everything on post is bikeing or walking distance try to stay away from leesvile they do have clubs in lake chariels stay away from cowboys they have a tendacy of being less then respectable to sertine people if you do go dress nice they have a strick dress code for men no baggy cloths gold chains etc fort Polk used to have biker safety course and a course for scuba diving they have hunting in between rotations of jrtc good luck and God speedResponse by David Pitt made Oct 3 at 2016 1:18 PM2016-10-03T13:18:15-04:002016-10-03T13:18:15-04:00SFC John Durham1943769<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>It's great if you like to hunt and fish.Response by SFC John Durham made Oct 3 at 2016 2:28 PM2016-10-03T14:28:31-04:002016-10-03T14:28:31-04:00MSgt James "Buck" Buchanan1944380<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>20+ years since I was there; second tour in mid-'90s showed local improvements over late '80s. Being out of the way it does provide for a combination of getting away from it all and forming good friendships. Lots of pretty neat scenery, at least back then, regardless of which direction you might head for a Sunday drive.Response by MSgt James "Buck" Buchanan made Oct 3 at 2016 7:15 PM2016-10-03T19:15:16-04:002016-10-03T19:15:16-04:00SFC Private RallyPoint Member1948805<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Any duty station is what you make it, I was there for almost three years and its not bad, if you are married, it might be a little overwhelming for your wife in the sense that there is nothing much to do In the area, you have to journey out once in a while, but over all its not bad, but it all depends on what you are going there to do. I was an OC so I didn't mine the location.Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Oct 5 at 2016 10:12 AM2016-10-05T10:12:25-04:002016-10-05T10:12:25-04:00SSG Private RallyPoint Member1956882<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Fort Polk is a great duty station. I live in Deridder. There are a lot worse places to raise a family. Some advantages to retiring in Louisiana is that the state does not tax your retirement. The Louisiana Homestead Exemption Tax: The first 75000 of your home if you by one is exempt from state tax. I could go on. I was married with 2 kids...FT Polk is very good for the Sportsman.( hunting, fishing)..but not so good if you like to party and go to clubs...Me and the family spent most of our time in Lake Charles & Alexandria ( shopping etc). Long drives though....but not too bad if you make a day of it...Response by MAJ Private RallyPoint Member made Feb 3 at 2017 7:39 AM2017-02-03T07:39:39-05:002017-02-03T07:39:39-05:002016-10-02T16:22:58-04:00
