The job is not easy, it is long hours, but it is rewarding. Consider you have to take your recruits to MEPS at 0500. You are responsible for your recruits to a point. I will tell you this; recruiting is not the regular Army, it requires that you are self-motivated, disciplined, and be able to work with zero supervision. Recruiting requires real leadership skills, some officer who probably never done recruiting told me that is salesmanship, incorrect! You cannot sell a lifestyle. Those who didn't like it is because they lack all the qualities I listed above. Recruiting is though, and you have no control over the applicants, no ucmj on your side to punish them. I am at your service if you need anything else. The horror stories are true Recruiting is not for the feeble minded. It’s definitely the hardest job I’ve ever had in or out of the Army! It is rewarding however changing people’s lives! It has been a very long time since I was one, but I enjoyed it and if you work smart, it becomes easy and will give you many opportunities when you retire or just leave the Service Response by SFC David Xanten made Jan 9 at 2019 2:25 PM 2019-01-09T14:25:04-05:00 2019-01-09T14:25:04-05:00 1SG Bill Farmerie 4273128

Your best bet is to talk to current recruiters. I have heard that it has changed quite a bit over the years. Back in 95-98 we worked 6 days per week from early morning until late at night. I didn't like being a recruiter, however, I did learn more about myself that at any time in the Army. I feel my time on recruiting made me a better NCO. If you're successful at it, it will help you make promotion quicker. I was voluntold by the D.A. to recruit and it sucked because I was enjoying my career as a signal NCO.

The hours were long and the pressure was constant. It took a toll on my marriage and family life due to unpredictable work schedules.

After my 3 yr commitment, I made my gold badge and went back to my MOS. 7 months later I was called back. Let's just say that usarec converted my mos to career recruiting and I retired after completing 20 years in the Army. I have mixed feelings about it. You will have to be mentally strong to endure the success and failure that encompasses the recruiting dynamic.
