With 3rd BCT having left the process should have dropped a little since I was there too. There is plenty of great housing if you don't mind driving a bit but once again, they just built a whole bunch of new housing in the past few years. I feel that the army needs to enforce standards on reality places around all army bases... I know it's 1000 / month utilities included. You can find better deals off post but it will take some looking. I moved into a neighborhood off post vack when on post housing was taking all 1400 dollars a month bah from the soldiers. As it is now on post housing isn't bad but you can find better deals off post still. I have been here for quite some time and I have lived in several areas, and I found the Carthage area to be the best and most affordable, it places you closer to the airfield side of base and you are a little bit further away from Watertown and the commodities of main gate Fort drum, but the prices are much better. I'll tell you this, avoid Eagle Ridge unless you are willing to have headaches with Your neighbors, constant police presence, excissive prices and not receiving your security deposit at the end of your contract even if you have an immaculately clean house. I lived there in two separate occasions thinking it would change due to different management and I quite frankly I was disappointed because they are overtly expensive for their homes. If you are single the barracks are your best bet. Good luck. The off post housing just do your research and bargain with them because it's a renters market right now. I lived on post for 3 years and then moved off post for my last year at Drum. On post housing in convienent in the winter, but it has many draw backs in my opinion. I lived in the old housing in Rhicard Hills. Had to deal with flooding twice. Multiple maintence calls on the same issues that never really got resolved. The ladies at the leasing office were nice when i moved in and quickly became rude and nasty. No one was really helpful until i told them i was moving off post. I went from a 7 min drive to almost 30 min drive. I moved to Carthage. Love the area i moved to nice village and great schools if you have children. For me it was worth the drive and I was much more comfortable in the snow after 2 years. This is only a decision you can make depending on what is important to you in your home.
