That action by a 14 yo boy is so deplorable I can only imagine what influenced him. I have heard of crimes being live streamed onto Facebook with or without anonymity of the poster. It would seem that criminals would not want a video snapped of their crimes and especially posted on the Internet where it never goes away. Perhaps young people do not recognize that material posted online can never be deleted.

I see that influence not only in Facebook but also texting. When children, or anyone for that matter, uses these medias for primary communication reasons all empathy is lost. When you don't have to look someone in the eye, and see their facial expressions, when speaking with them it just isn't real anymore. In these situations people tend to lose their humanity (most of the time). Looking at the live video or looking at pornography on the Internet it's no different to these people.

People acting criminally is really nothing new? Social media only makes more people aware and much, much, faster.
There is a ton of information we do not know about this story...and in truth I am afraid to find out.

I have to re-educate my grandson now and then on what he saw on TV, or read. He's slowly coming around to understand that there is a lot of garbage floating around in the social media circle.

I think it makes people dumber, more self-centered, and actually anti-social.

People are dumber because they believe anything they see or read on the Internet, and like many, think that posting criminal behavior is cool and somehow won't come back to bite them in the ass later on. Many people also do not realize that whatever is on the Internet, stays on the Internet. So all those pictures or videos you took of yourself and posted are still around. Search engines suck them up and archive them. Schools you apply to can and are searching social media for dumb stuff you posted. Future potential employers can search for them and see them. Apparently, people's use of spelling and grammar has gotten really bad. That's not even the worst part of it-- people lash out for being corrected and celebrate being ignorant.

Social media makes people self-centered. I remember early on in Facebook history when the majority of what you saw (and still do to an extent now) is what people were eating at meals. With few exceptions, no one cares what you're eating. Really. Or they would post blow by blow real-time updates about their daily lives. For example... Going to Starbucks. At Starbucks. Standing in line. What should I order? Ordered. Paying. Then of course a picture of the person's coffee. Again, no one cares to read about the boring minutae of your life. Really. Cat and baby videos are cool though.

Social media has made people anti-social. Just look at how many people walk around with their heads over their phones. Or people who sit next to eachother and text instead of talk. Or people who post vile things because of the "anonymity" of the Internet. People who, without that "anonymity" would be beaten to a pulp for saying what they type. Social media has desensitized people to being humans that they feel that livestreaming a rape or murder is socially acceptable.

I like my smartphone, but it is not my life. I use it as a tool to make certain things easier, or to entertain myself if I am stuck waiting somewhere. But it is not the most important thing in my life. Maybe that is because I was 27 before I even had a pager. I talk to people face to face whenever possible, and try to ban electronic devices from the dining room table during meals. I am determined to not allow social media to make me anti-social.

The youth of today doesn't think there are repercussions for their actions on social media. They live in a 140 character fantasy world. As an employer, I often check the internet and social media sites before moving someone to next steps. Your profile may be YOURS and that should be your space to do whatever you like, but you are harshly judged by what you put on the internet whether it's good or bad. Today's youth think social media is a free for all to write and do whatever you please. It most definitely is not and often the things you say can come back to haunt you through present/future relationships or present/future employment. If you say something really out there and people don't agree, they can/will go to your employer and you can be fired. Claim the First Amendment all you like, but your employer can and will fire you if you bring bad light upon their organization. Long gone are the days where you can say and do as you please. That's unfortunate, but this is what we fought for. We fought for these kids to be on their phones checking Facebook and Twitter 20hrs a day and not "engaging" in real life, face to face conversations. I miss flip phones that were used to make and receive calls only or better yet, house phones! If I'm not home when you call, leave a message and I'll call you back when it's convenient for me! LOL

Everyone is on social media these days. Part of our marketing program was running ads on platforms like Facebook. I just learned that the Air Force is the branch with the most people engaged at Facebook at work, according to my cousin who is an E3.

this is one of many posts on social media, why I don't know, is it to bring up their credibility as a gangster, or just plain stupid of the facts of law and evidence, also where are these social media admins at by allowing this type of behavior to be streamed in the first place, hum, my first thought, ratings, until it gets too hot to handle, then they pull it, but its already out there, as long as social media thrives on sensationalism this type of bs will continue, the police will have their evidence, and the gurus of the social media will get paid

Social media has effected most people in this nation Maj Marty Hogan. I was exposed to it in my 40's while many young service members were exposed to it as soon as they became aware. Children grow up with technology available at the time and learn to master it while they are learning how to speak, read and understand language and non-verbal clues.
Sin comes from within. Social media merely serves as a vehicle for whatever is in our collective hearts to be unleashed. Those of us who know the Lord, tend to use social media to bless more than to curse.

Sp4 Byron Skinner. Looks like we have a though poise on Rally Point attempting to promote a point of view. Of course social media effects young people today it is the method of communications. In the 1930 it was the telephone. In the 1990's I worked for Nokia the worlds largest maker of personal mobile communications. At the time we were trying to work out the protocol for the first generation of digital wireless. While working for the company who at the time controlled 40% of world wide mobile phone market. in R&D we through an accident really discovered, invented the ability to text over a phone. We also discovered how to adapt "Blue Tooth" to mobile phones. To the testing idea to management laughter and the President of Nokia at the time said who would want to text when you could talk. To Blue Tooth the same foresighted individual said, the mobile phone is not a garage door opener. The company did copyright with ideas. Now of course Nokia is a brand of Microsoft and for all practical purposes is out of the wireless communication business. Both of these idea have greatly effected not only the youth of the world by nearly everybody else.
