How is the transition from Active Duty to the National Guard? What are the big changes to expect aside from it being part time obviously?

I signed a Try 1 contract with the Texas NG and switched jobs from 12b to 92y. I did 3 and a half years Active Duty at Ft Hood and I felt I was ready to get out but I still wanted to keep some benefits so why not try it out for a year and see how it goes?

The main thing you will notice is the relaxed atmosphere. No longer active, so while there is the respect of rank, you are still all civilians when you go home after a weekend drill. You will be in for a shock, some like it, others not so much... depends on the unit and ppl also... just don't have hopes set too high for the NG

It was a good idea for you to do the try 1 contract. I've only been NG but when we get people that are coming from AD they seem to be surprised by the difference. And not in a good way. It's hard to say what to expect because every company is different but I'd say overall just be prepared to get the "part time" experience. Expect for whatever is planned to not go as planned and you'll do just fine.

SPC (Join to see) - Company A, 3rd Battalion, 144th Infantry. They have a new armory since I was there, decades ago in the 1980s. It was a good unit at the time, and I enjoyed my time there. Good luck.

When I was in in 1986 to 1992 I was disappointed at all the inspections. It was like someone higher up was just trying to keep us busy. When we had a project to preform we kicked ass. We built a baseball field for the local Junior College. A shooting range back stop for the Kansas State Highway Patrol. A walk bridge at the Topeka Air Port. Summer camps were usually miserable hot in Salina, Kansas, but we got to use explosives and have war games with the Regular Army at Fort Riley. I was activated for one flood and one tornado clean up. I was also involved with the Color Guard and marched at many parades and presented the colors at high school football games. We were even sent to represent the State of Kansas at the memorial dedication of the Medal of Honor wall in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. I never knew it could be so damn hot that far north. The guard is what you make of it. I have great buddies and some of them have been in over 30 years.

Expect not to go to school for your new MOS immediately. You're already MOS qualified so there's no rush for your unit. In fact, you might not go during your first year at all.

I was offered bonuses for 12B in the guard but for 3 yr contracts and 6 yr contracts

SPC (Join to see) from everything you've told me, I believe you'd be better served by going back and asking for a 3 year 12B contract with a bonus. Let me explain :
1. You don't receive any civilian skill or training becoming a 92Y. If you were leaving the Army as a 92Y you would have several years of supply experience behind you that would make you attractive. Your new MOS won't grant you any more advantage than you have right now applying as an entry level logistician.
2. You may not love being a 12B, but after a year of not doing it, you will miss it. Then you do the job for 2 weeks in the summer, have some fun, and go back to regular life. Most of what you do drill weekends is the same no matter what your MOS.
3. You get a bonus.
4. You're filling a slot your MOS Q in so you can actually get promoted.
5. You are probably receiving 2 years of stabilization, which you can still waive if you want to deploy.

I agree with what you’re saying but I wasn’t too sure of how it would go for me that’s why I did the try 1 I didn’t want to commit to anything big but say I do enjoy it I would highly consider serving as a 12b again

SPC (Join to see) you're at Hood already and joining the TANG, just head down there and meet the armory you would be serving in. Of all the Guard units I've worked with, Texas was one of my favorite. I would definitely deploy with people from there again.
