But luckily my best bud in the Marines sat next to me and we helped each other though this transition. He kept telling me to stop saluting all the ROTC cadets, calling the Jesuits &quot;Sir&quot; and Nuns &quot;Ma&#39;am&quot; and every time my name was called in class I would jump up &amp; yell &quot;Sir Yes Sir&quot;.... but after a few moths I was OK &amp; just buried myself in class work .. The time it took for me to walk from CBPO to my truck after my final out processing briefing. Up until that point I had been somewhat considering a transfer to the Reserves, so that I&#39;d have something if my great new civilian gig didn&#39;t work out. I can remember being on the sidewalk almost to my truck, and I thought to myself: &quot;You know what? No, it ain&#39;t happening. I&#39;m a civilian now, It&#39;s time to put my full focus on the future.&quot; I&#39;ve never really looked back and regretted any of it. Mentally about a week. That&#39;s one huge benefit of the back in the days, 2 years Draft. Some were not that lucky due to tours in Nam but not all of them. Things hummed along rather nicely, especially as I was also in the reserves. That reserve time, in retrospect, facilitated my transition to being a civilian again. Once a month I was with what had been my LIFE but I would return to what was becoming my new life. All that aside, I&#39;d say it took me almost six years to fully transition. I took off my uniform, stuffed it in my duffel bag, went to a pawn shop and sold the whole shebang. We were at Ft. Bliss and had a van full of men that needed rides to their home. The last stop was in the panhandle then we turned home for Kentucky, It was an awesome experience and it got me the job I wanted (Electronics manufacturing). I made some awesome friends. I regret every second of the decision to leave the Army. I know that it will take time, but I found already myself looking on the internet for ways to rescind my retirement and go back in. I will attempt to find a classification that I can fit into, lately it is veteran, but that doesn&#39;t seem to ease the pain. Been retired for 18 months and still transitioning in my mind. Tried transitioning my healthcare to VA but they&#39;re just not what I expected. VA did do a pretty good job with their compensation for my injuries. It was really weird at first going on vacation without being on leave. No formations, PT tests, or that high level of accountability from the military. So you have to be more self disciplined in certain areas. And on a good note you can let yourself go a little and grow your hair, drink an extra beer, get whatever tattoo wherever you want it, and be as free as you always wanted to be while in the service. Never fully transitioned to civilian life and really don&#39;t want to. Family is all military or LEOs. Friends are all former military or retired LEOs. Co-workers from second career were all Former military or former LEOs. I&#39;m 100% A-Okay with that. Vets bond faster with other vets and are more willing to help each other. The biggest thing about civilian life is NO ONE is in charge! Well except my wife. Began a new career in August. <br /><br />Then I joined the Army Reserves for 8 1/2 years. I worked for a company that moved me. My new home was 200 miles from my drill site. We worked a deal for a transfer. But after 2 months a LT decided he did not approve and I was directed to drill at the old location. I drove to drill, filled out retirement papers, and was released by the battalion commander. <br /><br />I forgot about the Army before I was back home. I do miss aspects of the military, although it&#39;s been a fun and interesting transition to civilian life.
