I am currently going through a Chapter 5-17 process. My chapter was initiated 3 months ago, it has been completed and cleared by Legal, I have received my first chapter reading by my company commander and I have been to my chapter brief at TDS. My chapter has now gone back to legal and I have been told that once it comes back again from legal, I will receive my second chapter brief before it gets approved by the battalion commander and then finally the brigade commander. I have also been told that once the brigade commander approves it, i will then get orders to start clearing. Can anyone tell me how long the rest of this process will take? I am trying to figure out how long it will be until I am completely out of the army. How long does this particular chapter usually take?

Any update on your chapter 5-17? I could really use some information. I'm being recommend for separation. Due to sleep walking. From everything I've read online. It will be a chapter 5-17. But now I'm just waiting on my command to officially tell me I'm getting separated. I'm just waiting now. And it's driving me crazy. I was recommended for separation a month ago. And still no word yet. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Hey Justin. A chapter 5-17 usually takes 3-6 months from the time they decide to the time you are out. For me it took five months. It also depends on whether or not you want it. In my case, I didn’t fight it. I’m actually using this chapter to file for compensation now.

SGT (Join to see) thanks for getting back to me. Just the waiting game is driving me crazy. My command recommend me for the wrong chapter 5-13 (only a behavioral health doctor can recommend that kinda chapter and you have to be seeing them for at least 6 months) so my chapter got sent back and they had to resend it out again. I always have to ask about it. To see what's going on. My unit is suppose to be going in rotation next year. So hopefully I'm gone before then.

All depends what type of soldiers they are dealing with..... if they are good Soldiers, they try to get them out quickly, but if you are a bad Soldier, they will drag it out and watch you be miserable......

For administrative discharges, they are done when they are done. Kind of a crappy answer, but there is no timeline that has to be met. When it gets through each of those steps, you'll know. If I were to venture a guess based on what you've said, I'd say about 3 more months.
