How long does it take to transition from Active Duty to National guard?

I am currently in my re-enlistment window and was considering going to the National Guard. I was told I had to wait 6 months from my ETS date in order to create a contract with the Guard. I was wondering how long after I create my contract do I have to wait to transition over?

If you have no issues and are eligible for reenlistment, then you are also eligible to talk to the Reserve Component Career Counselor (RCCC) on your installation about signing a Guard contract now that will put you in the Guard the day after your ETS.
Talking to the RCCC is one of your mandatory appointments if you are out-processing anyway, they can provide you with information about every Guard and Reserve opportunity available where you plan to move.

So even though I'm not 6 months from my ETS date but I am in my re-enlistment window I can still sign a contract with the Guard?

Sorry, you probably have to wait until six months from ETS, but you can have the RCCC start looking for your slot now.

SPC (Join to see) their system won't let them lock in anything until 6 months out. It doesn't matter what day you sign, your contract still begins the day after ETS. Giving them more time to work with you will allow them more time to find a slot you want, or request to have one built at a unit close to where you will reside after ETS.

SPC (Join to see) Contact them as early as you can. What you should push for is if you intend to ETS, your transition to the Guard should be the following day. Work with the Guard recruiter to make this happen. If you already know what state you want to live in, make sure they have a slot for you and one that you could potentially be promoted in to down the road. Message me if you have additional questions.

SPC (Join to see) - No. Your contract (initial) is for 8 years. Usually it is written where you have 2,4, or 6 years of AD time. At that point you ETS. You still have the remaining balance to be filled in either Reserve, Guard or IRR. You ETSing only ends the active duty component of your enlistment contract and you can transition to the NG the very next day.
