My time was extended for an Iraq deployment. I converted the Battalion from a Group to a Battalion, activated the Battalion, deployed the Headquarters, shed the Peace Trace and picked up the War Trace, led the War Trace, redeployed the War Trace, gained the Peace Trace back and changed command. My Peace Trace was 700 in 5 states. My War Trace was 1,200 from 8 units. Everyone came home without major injury and zero KIA. Most challenging of my assignments. My tasks included planning and deploying the initial Cruise Missile bases in Europe, and managing secure storage capability program of "special assets" for NATO air forces. All of that led to my involvement in the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty signed by Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev in the years following my time in Europe. Monmouth. It was a major systems program designated as a Defense Enterprise Program and I was scheduled to stay through specific testing and production milestones.
