I got out of the military 8 years ago and when I first got out I talked to probably 15 guys regularly. As time went on that number dwindled to two. As time went on I drifted apart from these individuals for various reasons. How many friends from your time in the service do you still talk to and why do you think you drifted apart from the other friends you had?

PO1 Dave Martin Between several and many... One is my neighbor (former Battalion CSM). I still keep in touch with dudes I went to basic and AIT with (80), a dude I was a LT with (86), my 1SG from Company Command (90-92), and many others. The issue I see if over time, those contacts and times stretch and dwindle... Social media reconnected me with several as well. But, honestly, I would say we all drift apart over the years.

PO1 Dave Martin LTC Stephen F. CPT Walt Tollefson CPT (Join to see) I talked to many people on Facebook from different units I served. The most active is the 57th MP (Honor Guard) company, West Point from the late 70s early 80s. We had a front row seat or protected people during many historical events that can never be duplicated.

about 10. we are scattered across the US and rarely get together. If there were a crisis, they would appear out the mists. Of this , I have no doubt.

It's amazing the bonds that can be made. My father-in-law, who was the recipient of the DSC for heroism in Korea (he single-handedly took out a Chinese bunker, saving his platoon from being cut to shreds - http://valor.militarytimes.com/recipient.php?recipientid=7039), when he passed, one of his former Company members came to the Wake and stood vigil over his casket and again at his funeral, stood vigil. I was so humbled to watch this 65+ year old former Army non-com stand guard over my father-in-law. He said it was his duty to do this as SFC Elthon had done that for the company back in Korea.

So LTC (Join to see) , you are quite right when you say "they would appear out the mists."

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
