Oh yes, the one's who "started it all". Must've been some really interesting times back then.
There's also a yearly OTRG award.
Here's a couple good sites...

Not sure that I would have been real thrilled being dropped off on an Island all by myself maybe with some Island Native Locals "Here's a Radio Let us Know What is Going On". That part would suck. Brave Bastards, I much preferred going on a Battlewagon with lots of Antennas and Guns Just in Case.

Heard about them briefly in a discussion about WW II OPINTEL and how their work overlaid the analysis of the other side our of our house! Thanks for the good read, PO1 William "Chip" Nagel

When I first read the discussion I was thinking "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac PO1 William "Chip" Nagel. Before you mentioned it I had no heard of the "On The Roof Gang." I was thinking bad guys; but after reading the article you linked to I know understand they were good guys who worked on the roof. Growing up before air conditioning was widely available I remember going up to the roof or climbing a tall tree to feel any breeze. when i could and the great song "Up on the Roof" by the Drifters.
I expect the information on the On the Roof Gang wasn't declassified until the past few years due to teh sensitive nature of whet they were doing.
"Therefore, in July, the CNO announced the establishment of a school to instruct radio operators in intercept operations, particularly for Japanese kana. The first class would begin on October 1, 1928, and instructors were to be two of the self-taught radiomen from the Asiatic fleet."

That is alright On The Road (Well on the Sea at least) On the Roof and they did evolve into kind of a wild group after WWII. The Naval Security Group as I knew it.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - the Army, even the active duty, are on the cheap..our courses that are 8 months long active duty at Fort L. Are now in three phases at a local unit near you. I go to Fort DIX for 2 weeks of intense studies taught but 2 or 3 0-5 instructors then I go to one weekend a month at my armory (with tons of homework and writing assignments) for 8 months then another 2 weeks of final schooling and it is the equivalent to the 8 month course. It is like trying to drink from a fire hose. Only AGR and the top notch active duty get the 8 month paid course. It counts toward my 0-5 promotion. It is called Command and General Staff Officer College. I am lucky, as a delivery driver for UPS and a father of 2 kids and age 53, to be able to get access to this information. I live in Canada and I have been deployed 3 times. I did get to go to Pearl Harbor at USARPAC in 2011 and I did get to get in on exercise KEY RESOLVE. I loved going to the USS Bowfin sub and the USS Missouri. I am a naval history buff. I have been on the USS Alabama and the USS Yorktown while training at Fort Bragg before I went to Afghanistan in 2008. I like learning about the interoperabliltiy of the services.

Naval Security Group was Disestablished 2005 I think, during the transition started hearing about Naval Information Warfare Command. Now I think they go by the Moniker of 10th Fleet.

If anyone is in the Information Warfare community (please note, the word dominance has been removed and is no longer IDW), you all should have heard of the infamous, "On The Roof Gang". I've also heard of the On The Roof Gang Distribution.
